Custom barrel ??
« on: October 07, 2008, 09:43:59 AM »
I was going to get a 357 barrel, and rechamber to 35 rem, but now that there is talk of a production barrel I will wait and see on that one.

I have been thinking about a rebore 375 win or 405 win.  Those of you that have either of these, let me know how they are please?  What barrel did you start with, which ejector/extractor parts ?  How do they shoot? etc..

Any info that anyone has is appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

I have a 405 Win that was a 38-55 Target, a simple rebore and rechamber, then the ejector was cut down to work with the larger 405 rim, same could be done for an extractor.

I also have a 38-55 Target, I just load Starline long 38-55 brass to 375 Win velocities using Lyman 375 Win data for 220gr jacketed bullets, Boer Bullets makes .379" 220gr jacketed soft points that shoot real well in Marlin made 38-55 barrels. One alternative would be to do as Haywire Haywood did, have a 223 barrel rechambered and rebored to 375 Win, then you could use .375" bullets instead of .379" and bigger. Wayne York did the work for both of us.

Thanks for the info Tim.  It looks like they are both great shooters.  Did Wayne York do the ejector modification too?   Are both of your barrels are still full 32" barrels?  Any info on how the 405 would perform in a shorter 22"-24" barrel?

Thanks,
Kevin

The Target barrel is 28", both are untouched, Wayne did the ejector modification, but I've done them too for other chamberings, a dremel works fairly well. Hodgdon lists 2300-2400fps 300gr Hornady FP loads from a 24" barrel.

Haywoods .375 dose a good job on deer I dropped a nice buck with it last year because Ian wasn't going to hunt, I thought it a waste to see all that nice rifle work just sitting there.

I think I would prefer the shorter barrel.  It would also be much easier and less expensive to buy a 223 since the 38-55 is discontinued.

Hi Bob,
Good to see you on here again.  Hope you are feeling better.
Is his .375 barrel a 22", or a 24" bull?
