223 superlight bullet choices
« on: October 07, 2008, 06:56:44 AM »
Just wanted to share what I have learn so far about the superlight 223,,and maybe get some input.I am having trouble finding a bullet that will group better then 6 inches at 100 yards.I sent the rifle back to H&r thinking something was wrong with the gun.Well they sent the gun back and said they tightened the forearm screw and a target with a 3 shoot group. The group measured less then 1 inch. The bullet that they were using was Remington 62 grain match bullet. That has got me searching for a 62 grain bullet that would hold together when hunting for deer.I have found a barnes triple shock in 62 grain.Being it's a triple shock it should hold together on deer size game.Has anyone tried 62 grain triple shocks in there superlight handi's?My barrel twist is 1 and 9.Just wanted to bring this topic up because there is alot of people having accuracy problems with this rifle.

Thanks
Moose

With the 1:9 twist barrel you need to use the bullets with longer bearing surface.  This means bullets usually heavier than 55 grain.  These bullets will stabilize and will be VERY accurate when you get the 'recipe' (load) down.

For deer you can look at the heavy Speer Hunting bullet or the Swift Scirocco.  Both are 70-75 grains. There are a few other brands that make heavier bullets in .224, but make sure you get a "hunting" bullet and not a "varmint" bullet.  Nosler makes a 60gr Partition, but it may not have the bearing surface you need to stabilize in your barrel.

Good luck in your choice.  Make sure you get a HUNTING bullet.  You don't want varmint expansion blowing all over in meat that will be eaten.

Thanks Steve,

I did try the 60 grain Nosler Partition. The best I could get was 6 inches.I was thinking the Scirocco would be more of a varmint bullet?I will look into the speer bullet and see what it says.

The Barnes TSX is a deer bullet, so if that groups good, your search is over.  DP

the only bullet my barrel likes is the Winchester 62 gr PowerPoint.  It will routinely printsub 1" 5shot groups all day.   55gr bullets print 3-4 inches on a good day.   I have tried a few speer 70 gr but they seem to open to 3 ".

I have used the 62 gr PP on hogs up to 175 lbs with no failures and all pork went into the freezer.
