The ones I've taken have DRT.  Have used loads out of Handloader mag, listed by Brien Pierce.  Good loads also listed in other sites here in GBO.  John Linebaugh has some good loads listed as well as Paco Kelly.  Gonna try some cast LBTs this year if I use the 45.  Just spent several hours on Veral Smith's site tonight.  Lots of good info there, need to spend a few more days reading that one.  I've used H-110 and LilGun alot with the heavier loads and Keith style SWC's that did a fine job.  DP

Most accurate load for my 45 Colt BC 20”.
With a jacketed hunting bullet (Barnes 225 gr. XPB #45120).
Best 7 shot group at 50 yards was 0.72”.
Case length 1.280” C.O.A.L. 1.603”.
11.3 gr. of VihtaVuori 3N37 gives me 1485 fps.

Have not got a deer with it, but the Barnes bullet should do well.

I've read the the 44-40 (200gr lead) dominated the deer fields until it was displaced by the 30-30.  Wouldn't 200gr (soft) cast bullets driven at standard pressures in the 45 Colt surfice?  While I like tinkering with heavy loads with my 357 Magnum, the big bores seam to accomplish the same level of knock down with standard loads.

I shot mine for the first time yesterday .Clover leaf at 50yrs with the first three shots thought that was cool as I had not done that in awhile. But started to move scope over and get sighted in also moved back to 75yrds groups stayed tight but never did get all three touching again. It's basiclly at 1"at 75yrds and that will work fine for the early doe season next week .I have pronounced it good to go. Kurt

It is true that alot of animals have fallen to the old 44-40... However, last season my cousin was hunting with a 44mag handi-rfile and was shooting cheap mag tech's... The bullets failed to penetrate the shoulder at 30 yards... He shot the deer 3 times... I believe it was a bullet failure more than anything...

Hi  ;D ,
I'm sorta curious about those Magtech loads.
To shoot a deer 3 times....sounds like those loads were
light,as in cowboy loads.

Those 44 mag Magtechs..was the problem underpowered loads..or did the bullet fragment away without penetration?

I've never seen any magtech hunting bullets don't mean they don't make them but it sounds like thats what he was using. When I was looking for the bullets for my 32H&R mag rifle I found some magtechs that shot very well but were not really hard enough for hunting the first 2 coyotes I shot rolled pretty hard but I had tracking work on both so I went to another bullet they were both shot at less than 60yrds.Kurt

He said the bullet was flattened out against the shoulder blade that was a range of 30 yards... The deer then ran to the distance of about 60 yards the next shot was through the neck which put him on the ground... When he got to him He was trying to get on his feet again... I believe it was the 240gr soft nose load...

Hi Stumpjmpr  ;D ,
This does sound like it wasn't exactly bullet failure.
Sure points to cowboy ammo:underpowered loads.
Thank you for the info.

I have a Win 94 in .45colt. I havent shot any deer with it but it does a number on wild boar. I used the Cor-Bon 300gr jacketed soft point +P they list it @ 1300fps out of a 7 1/2" revolver I imagine it goes a might bit faster out of my 16 1/2" rifle. Their load would not be hard to duplicate it is a Sierra bullet and 2400 is a good powder along with H110 for heavy .45colt loads.

I shot a black tail with my Marlin 45 colt lever action.  The load was a Keith style 255 gr semi wad cutter and 10 gr of Unique.  I shot the deer at 40 yards in the lungs.  The animal ran about 25 yards and piled up.  Little or no meat damage and venison on the table what could beat that? ;D

Sounds like tha .45 LC is a good deer round...but as in any other caliber..we must choose our rounds carefully..

I shot a doe a few years ago with my Marlin 1894CB levergun.  I was using handloads... 250gr Hawk soft point at around 1600fps.  Stout.  I didn't shoot many, worried about bolt setback.  The doe was hit in the aft lung area, ran about 100 yds.  I sold that gun a couple years ago.  I like that caliber, but I'd probably push it out to a 454 if I had it in an action that could handle the pressure.  Sounds like a good Handi project.  Hmm....  :)

HH the 360gr load that Tim helped me with is nearly identical to the 360gr Buffalo Bore 454 and actually a little faster with safe Handy pressure. Sure hope I get to shoot one Thursday. Kurt

Although I haven't killed a deer with my Handi 45LC. I have killed a boar and at least a dozen whitetails with my Marlin and Contender 45LC's.

I have use the Speer 300gr mostly. I load it to 1300fps in the 10" Contender and 1600fps in the 1894. One 110lb doe was hit Texas heart shot running away up hill. Bullet exited under her throat as she hit the dirt.  I also like the 250 Partition. Only one deer to this bullet in the LC, but two more with it in my Muzzle loader at a bit higher velocity.

The Sierra 300 is another one I like, its a bit tougher than the Speer and works well.

I recently picked up two boxes of the Speer GD's for the Casull. It should work well in the higher velocities the rifle barrel can achieve. But I haven't used it yet.

Load it to "Ruger" velocities, do you part and you will never have a problem with this caliber.
