Cleaning The Handi?
« on: October 04, 2008, 06:15:31 PM »
I have my first Handi on the way and want to get all of my related gear before it arrives. My question is about the rod length for cleaning my new 308 Ultra Hunter with a 22" barrel. I'm going with a one piece coated rod.
Would a 24" rod work or should I go with the 36"? Sorry for such a lame question, but as I said I don't own one and value the opinions here. -Thanks -gary

I have a 36" rod to clean my BC.  It's the same rod I use to clean my Marlin 1895G, 18.5".  A bit awkward when used in a short barrel but it works.  I also could use it to clean my Ruger Blackhawk if that's all I had.  To me it's a question of how much do I want to invest in cleaning rods.

Get the 36" rod. If you have a bore guide (you should) in the chamber, you will need the added length. If you use the same rod (I do) for bolt guns, you will need the 36" to get through the action and barrel. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

Thanks for the replys. I was not sure of the extra length of the chamber/ throat area and didn't want to come up short with a 24". I do have many bolts 7mm - 30 cals and I guess I should get a longer rod that works with them also. I want to switch over to a one piece from the older 3 peice rods that I own. Which bore guild works well on a Handi? -g

I've got several rods that I've aquired over the years, coated, SS and carbon fiber, the Tipton carbon fiber are my favorite, they work great with the Kleenbore nylon muzzle guide used on the chamber end, I trim one side of the guide flat so it indexes to the ejector/extractor and centers the rod in the bore. Rod guide options are listed in the FAQs too, Sinclair makes one specially for the Handi, but they're not cheap, but work ok, are chamber specific. Their TC rod guides actually work better with a little modification to lock under the extractor/ejector.
