41 Mag Rifle
« on: October 01, 2008, 06:51:06 AM »
I have a .41 Mag pistol and am thinking of purchasing a rifle to go with it. Has anyone on here had any experience with one? If so what action and brand would you recomend? I will probably use it mostly for punching paper and maybe for whitetail.

This cartridge has never been "hot." Marlin did a series of lever actions and after a time they were selling off cheap so I assume the demand was not great. If you could find one... Not a match gun but light and fun and ... Otherwise the single shots are options. T/C. Brown 97. Etc. A bolt that feeds would be a chore, but doable. How much you want to spend? luck.

I'm aware of the fact that the .41 hasn't made a big splash but I've already got one so I thought I'd match it up with a rifle just for kicks. I was thinking about a lever action or possibly a single shot. I haven't got as far as thinking about dollars yet. I was wanting to hear of some peoples experiences both pro and con. I wouldn't want to invest a lot so it could be out of my reach. So far I'm just in the thinking stage (or maybe dreaming).

28 years ago I bought my first Ruger Blackhawk 41mag. 10 years later I bought a Marlin Model 94 chambered in 41mag. LOVE IT!! It is from the first run, has a straight grip and shoots like hot cakes. Prices on gunbroker.com are presently mid-400 to over 500 bucks! Not cheap, but neither are the more popular chamberings.
Most of what is available now is the 2nd run and have a pistol grip stock similar to most of their 30-30's and such. I just handloaded some of Veral Smith's 230grWFN bullets and was amazed that they fed like butter. I've never had a problem getting loads to chamber and feed properly, but I'm always aprehensive when the bullets get long are wide in the meplat. It will shoot as good as I can. I also have other 41mags, all revolvers, and have had a Contender in 41mag. Been a 28year love affair with the cartridge and going strong!
You will only be sorry if you don't get a rifle companion for your revolver. The Marlins are a hoot, but a little single shot would be cool, also.

Nodlenor,

Sounds like a plan to me. I've got all the Marlins in .41Magnum. The 1894 SS LTD is a real fun gun to shoot. I've tried everything from Corbon 170gr to there old 265gr cast load and they all work great. The easiest to find at present would probably be the 1894FG as it came out last. The 1894CCL is real nice, too. It has a straight stock and an octagonal barrel. I just put an octagonal barrel with Ballard rifling on my S model. I plan to do a little experimenting with it and a micro-groove FG when time permits. Keep looking for those Marlins. They show-up in the darndest places.

I'm looking everywhere I go with the hopes that one will turn up. The Marlin sounds like a good choice. I don't have a lever action in my safe at this time so that would be a good addition. I'll let you know if I find one.

Keep looking. I got an FG  3 years ago and really enjoy it. It has fed everything I put in it - Fed 250 cast core, all the Corbon 250 to 265, Rem 210, Win 240 and 175, and Buffalo Bore 265. For a few years the FGs were pretty common on Gun Broker but they seem to be scarce now.

Now I wish our caribou herd would bounce back as I'd love to take one with the rifle.  Good luck.
