9.3x74R in handi rifle
« on: September 28, 2008, 03:54:57 PM »
Has anyone heard of doing this conversion to a 9.3x74R to a handi rifle.  I know this isn't the most practical caliber but cant see why it couldn't be done.  Would make for an interesting rifle to breakout when everyone else has their 06 and 270 :)

It's been discussed several times, I would have one if my smith could put a .366" bore in a 25-06 or 280 barrel for me, but as of yet he doesn't have the tooling, so he did a 338-06 A-Square for me from the 25-06, but I still have an extra 26" 280 that's ready when he is! ;D Until then my 26" RMEF 35 Whelen will have to do.  ;)

What about a 7.62x54R?

The 9.3x74 is an old but very good caliber. The Handi system I believe
would support it. Cases and bullet would present a few problems.

Ruger chambers the #1 in that caliber but they are not available most of the time. I been trying to get one but no luck so far.

There is not much call for this caliber in this country and not all that much in Europe since there are so many big bore calibers. You be better of to make up something in 375 on several different cases that will outdo the 7.3x74.

If you want something with a lot of punch make up a 375 on a 338 Lapua case that is some thing like a 416 Rigby necked down to 375.

I have a dummy round like that sitting in front of me. But that case would not be suitable for a Handy with its 0.585" rimless case head.

I am playing around with the idea of turning a Ruger#1 into 375 Lapua just for fun..
