compact 22 lr

I have a 22lr sportster and was think of changing it over to a youth stock and shortening the barrel 2-3 inches. Why? I'm not sure, it seems like this would be a good packable/hiking size 22 rifle. Any thoughts?

I would suggest if you do that then ream out the chamber to .22 WMR and you would have a real useful pack gun.I have reamed out a .22 LR Versa Pak barrel to .22 WMR and it is GREAT!!! Also try a youth synthetic stock and save some weight....<><....

How difficult is it to ream out the chamber to 22 mag? Also, there is an interesting thread on a "pack rifle" in the centerfire section. The more I think about this, the more i like it.

How is that going to work? I recall the diameter of a 22 LR barrel is smaller than that of a Magnum.

You ream the entire barrel & cut new rifling to the new caliber.

negative, the difference is only about .001 and is no difference at all. The proper chamber reamer (rifle) is used just as you do a .357 Mag to .357 Max. My Gunsmith did mine in a short time and it works great and is very accurate. Many .22 LR's have been converted to .22 Mag, mostly single shots....<><....

Considering it isn't made any more, it may be tough to find a new one, but many have been made, so start looking.

Here goes some heresy on this website
When I want to take a light, fast swinging rimfire I grab my Ruger 10/22 stainless synthetic. The first time out with this rifle for snowshoe, varying hare, the beagles put one out of the ferns 20 feet in front of me. The bunny litterally ran over my foot and I swung from the hip and fired as he went by putting a LR behind his ear. That's the way it's been with that rifle. I love my Handis, but a lot of times I grab that little Ruger.

If you are shooting from the hip then I guess I am glad I am not your hunting partner. Sounds kinda like hunting with Dick Cheney.
