.300 win mag rifle?

I'm looking for a .300 win mag rifle. I want to know if I should get the  Wby vangaurd a ruger M77 or other?

If your local Walmart has one, it's hard to beat the Weatherby Vanguard for the money, something like $386 or so.  I've had a Ruger M77 .300 WM.  It shot Ok for me.  I had it for 20 some years and finally traded it this year for a Win featherweight.  It killed both mule deer I shot with it just fine.  All the major brands are probably OK, get the one you like the feel of the best.

I don't know what your budget is, but for about $100 more, if you go to either gunbroker.com or auctionarms.com, you will see that gunfinder has a Tikka in Stainless/Synthetic for $483 and that's one heck of a price!  I don't know if they are still for auction, but if you find them, then you should definately get one!

After a short time on this forum, you will quickly learn that I am a very big fan of Tikkas rifles.   They are made in Finland and have excellent quality and accuracy.  In fact, many of our members have purchased Tikkas at my suggestion and everyone has been very pleased with them.

As for the Vanguard - it's essentially a Howa rifle, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but don't think that it's a full-blown Weatherby either.  As for the Ruger - I am not a fan.

I own Remington 700s, Wichester 70s, Browning A-Bolts, Tikka Whitetail Hunters, and Sako 75s.  I have not yet received my Sako, but I have shot many of them and love them the most - but they are expensive at about $1,000.00.   A Tikka is essentially a lower priced Sako - competing with the Remington 700s (which are my next choice).

Remington 700 all the way, I've owned two (including the one I have now) and they are great shooters, extremely reliable and even a little on the heavy side to absorb recoil.  One tip I'll give you for the .300 WM...don't get a lightweight...the recoil wil just kill your shoulder...secondly, if your into serious shooting get a muzzle-brake and a good pad.  300's snap quite hard if you've got the wrong combination for it, if you are afraid of, or do not enjoy your gun, precision will suffer....magnums are tricky to handle if you anticipate the fire...

Have a look at CZ with ether the American or montana stock.These are a
full size rifle with the wheight to tame a magnum, and they shoot very well.If you get something with a muzzle break then get a REAL good set of ear muffs. Have fun..Jack. :grin:

My Godson just got a BRAND NEW Tikka for $600… and it is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!  It has a high Monte Carlo roll over cheek piece, beautiful walnut stock, perfect hand-checkering, perfectly done bluing and an owner-adjustable trigger.  It’s about the most beautiful rifle I have ever seen.  If I were going to buy another rifle, it would be a Tikka just like my Godson’s!

Personally, I have never dealt with the Remington factory folks, but I've just read too many complains in other forums from current or former Remington owners who are considerably less than happy with the poor service they've gotten from the Remington factory folks.

They are saying if you buy a Remington 700 and it's ok, then you have a good, accurate rifle.  But if you have any problems with it, the level and quality of service is lacking.  Again, this is what I've read both here in this forum and other forums... I have no personal knowledge of these problems since I don't own a Remington 700.

Just thought I'd give you a "heads-up" on what some Remington owners are saying.  But, ultimately... it's your call.

I've got a Ruger M-77R in .300 Win Mag and it's a fantastic shooter.  And I've shot other Ruger .300's besides mine that shot just as well.  I read an article several years ago in one of the gun mags that tested the Ruger and the guy said his test rifle was incredibly accurate and he gave a load using a stout charge of IMR-4831 and a Sierra 200gr boattail that gave him 3/8" five-shot groups.  I thought, yeah right...  But I loaded up some and tried it and got the same results.  My normal hunting load with a 180 grain Nosler partition and IMR-4831 powder shoots into well under an inch also.

For grins, I like to load mine with 130gr Speer hollowpoints at around 3400fps and plaster groundhogs.  When they are way out there past 400 yards, and you miss, that bullet kicks up enough dust that you can easily see where it went.  The misses are my fault, and not the rifle's.  What JACKNZ said about the ear muffs is right.  But I wear earplugs, PLUS muffs when I'm near or shooting a rifle with a muzzle break.  

Also, keep in mind that the Ruger will come with scope rings, and that will save you around $50.  The other rifles mentioned are all good rifles too.  Go to some gun stores and handle and fondle several different brands and models and see what really strikes a chord in your heart, and go for it!  The greatest specifications and recommendations in the world don't mean diddly-squat if YOU aren't comfortable with the rifle.

My 0.02. My favorite rifle is 300 Win Mag Remington Model 700 Sendero SF. Accuracy is superb. Right now I am shooting Nosler 200 gr. Accubonds and getting < 1.0" at 200 yards. Only change is a Timney trigger. Bit on heavy side but if you want to shoot heavier bullets, you most definitely want to have a rifle that has a stable platform like the Sendero. I carried this rifle throughout the Adirondacks and felt it wasn't any more difficult to carry than a standard 700 at 8 #'s or so. Sometimes I think the weight of a rifle is greatly over emphasized for carry purposes. Let's face it, most of the time, you carry it with a sling anyway so what's the big deal? I've carried slug guns all day or even my Hawkins .54 which are way heavier.  Take some crap out of your back pack if weight is an issue. Take a hard look at the Sendero SF and I think you will like what you see (HS Precision stock with full bedding block doesn't hurt either). Muddy

My budget was on the light side so I bought the Remington model 710 in
.300magnum.Its a good shooter,But it sure needs a make over 8) It got
good reviews in Guns & Ammo magizine.
