New "Handi-Mag" rifles in 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Winchester mag
« on: September 27, 2008, 08:31:00 AM »
They are not on the website, but in the 2008 catalog  I picked up has them listed.  They are in the Sythetic/Stainless/Superlight section.  The new style synthetic stock, blue frame, 26" stainless barrel.  Anyone have any info on these?  I'm guessing they are not in production.

They never got beyond the prototype frame, they were cancelled in January before the SHOT show due to lack of pre-production orders from distributors, Marlin didn't want to invest the $20k in final testing so they cancelled them. They originally intended to produce them in 338 Winmag as well as 7mm Mag and 300 Winmag. I had placed an order for a 7mm mag last November, so much for that. :-\

Dunno, my Marlin contact isn't working for Marlin anymore, he returned to working in handgun manufacturing elsewhere. But it would be a surprise if they did if the lack of distributor pre-orders was any sign of the potential market.

I had gotten a price and everything and ordered a 7mm Mag., and hoped to add a .300 Win later.  Two of my buddies were seriously considering the new magnums.  I thought there was a lot of interest in them.  I'd like to see them do it. :)

Is there a pressure issue or what?

Darn:  you had me going there at first.  Thought they had come back with the project.  I want a .338 Win Mag in a Handi.

What is the biggest cartridge diameter a Handi is safe for?

It's not just the size, it's the pressure also. Big size and large pressure = stretch/lug setback.

The bigger the casehead, the lower the pressure must be, right now the 500S&W is the most potent cartridge as far as pressure and casehead size in a factory chambering, it has a SAAMI MAP or 60kpsi and a 526" diameter casehead, it also has a reputation for setting back of the underlug as Joe mentioned. It's actual operating pressure is about 52kpsi in current data, so that could be the saving grace that keeps the 500S&W Handi in working order. The magnum chamberings have .513" caseheads and SAAMI MAPS of 61-64kpsi and their operating pressures and data goes that high. A Handi would stand the magnum chamberings if held to mid level or lower loads, but then you're operating at non-magnum velocities that comparable bullets in the 280 and 30-06 can achieve, not much point in that, more recoil and powder used with the mags. :-\

So would a 300 RUM being doable in a Handi?  Would it achieve 300 Win Mag level velocities with reduced loads?  This is all hypothetical...I have no use for this as my next gun is a 338 Lapua, but just wondering.

Not smart, what's the benefit? What if someone unknowingly loads it with factory ammo? ??? The 300RUM has a SAAMI MAP of 65kpsi and .550" casehead. The 300WSM has a .555" casehead and the same pressure, and it won't work, I couldn't achieve 30-06 150gr velocities without too much action flex, that barrel became a donor stub.
