Barrel fitting questions
« on: September 25, 2008, 10:28:31 AM »
REF.--  FAQ s,-- Handi-Basics 101,--step2.Latch and shelf need to mate, get used to ea. other. {What indication is there, 1.-- of the need to fit better,   and 2.-- of the accomplishment of a good fit/matchup?   I have a variety of lockups; 1. There seems to be a lockup condition , the top of the barrel is 1/16" blow the top of the frame ,there is a faint light visible across the barrel/frame joint [a very snug .001" ] and there is no movement between the barrel and frame. It looks ,sounds and feels like a solid matchup. The release lever has returned to its full upward extension. 2. Most of the previous conditions are repeated with a few differences; The visible seam of light has disappeared, there is no gap for the .001 feeler gauge, and the release lever doesn't return to its fully raised position, raising only 1/16" above the frame edge vs. nearly twice as much with the first barrel. It appears the latch hasn't fully extended onto the latch shelf, allowing the release lever to . Is it true that when the latch is fully engaged with the latch shelf that the release lever will be fully raised and firm? Also ,if there is indication that the latch is riding along the left side of the latch shelf, does it matter ? It would be very difficult to even out that mating surface ,I believe, a lot of polishing and dye-checking with no real gain in strength.   Comments?

The release lever should not be at the top of it's travel.  Larry
