Old Savage stock for New Stevens?

  I want to buy a NEW Stevens 200 in 7mm/08.  If I buy an OLD style stock for a Savage 10 can I

  remove the magazine & make it work as a single shot ?  Thanks-Jim

Probably not easily.  I can think of at least 6 different hole spacings for the stock bolts through the years, short action CFR, short action old style, long action in both, an intermediate action length from the late 70's and a long action during that time, there may be others.  Larry

 Understand what you are saying Larry but I will be more specific.
 
 I understand that the current Savage 10 (short action) & the current Stevens 200 (short action), which

 are said to be interchangeable, have gone to a straight stack magazine replaceing the stagger stack from

 before. The aftermarket stock makers inform us that their stager action stocks will not fit the new straight

 stack actions. Of course the action bolt spread would have to be the same. But I was thinking (danger) if

 nothing was changed on the bottom of the actions the straight magazine could be removed from the new

 rifle  & installed on a stager magizine aftermarket stock & the rifle used as a single shot ? I haven't taken a close

 look @ any of the hardware I'm talking about so this is all speculation on my part.

 Has anyone done it ? Thanks-Jim

Problem is the old and new magazine models have a different hole spacing.  Larry

Is this only true for the short action? I just put my stevens 200 long action on my old 110 stock to try it and it worked fine. Now the magazine would be a problem but as a si nlge shot it appears to be no problem.

  Billy I just checked the Bell & Carlson Savage 110 stocks on the Midway site & they have the
 
 same disclamer they have for the short actions. They say the previous stagger stack will not interchange

 with the current straight stacks because of the magazine configuration, but Midway doesn't mention

 anything about bolt spread. 

 I know that Larry is correct in his advice about the short actions & I suspect the same is true about the

 long actions.

 Billy is your Savage 200 the previous type stagger stack mag? If so, that would have allowed the

 switch to work.

 The Savage 200 stock is what I call "serious Tupperware". I have stiffened up such stocks in the past

 by installing a fiberglass rod in the void with epoxy. I can live with this procedure if I have to but I

 would rather replace it with a nice after market stock of my choosing.

 I may have to search for a previous type stagger stack, new or used, to provide the options I want.

The long action stevens 200 that I have has the magazine that is intrigel with the stock, not that stays in the action like the savage. the Bolt spacing seems to be the same. Now I can only attest to long actions not short. I think I could even make the magazine work in the old stock with a little work.

The spacing of the holes on the long actions stayed the same when they went centerfeed.  I don't know what style/material stock you are after but Joel Russo, SSS, Stockade and McMillan all inlet for the new actions.  Going single shot it would only be a matter of moving one hole to fit the action in one of the readily available staggered feed stocks.  Wouldn't be hard in my opinion but I've put long actions in short action stocks before.

  YEP ! I forgot that I had Sharp Shooter Supply on my list of favorites & when I looked there was the

 info in the Tech section. As  mentioned above the bolt spread on the long action has always remained
 
 the same, but there are 3 generations of short action bolt spreads, ending with 4.400" since 2006.


 With what I have learned here, thanks to everyones help, I have pretty much decided to change my plans

 for now & go with a long action model. Thanks again for everyones great help  Jim
