Savage 93r17 Clip Problems
« on: September 24, 2008, 03:49:51 AM »
I just got a Savage 93r17 bull barrel wood stock and the thing shoots like a champ.  But...the Clip is sloppy.  It gets caught on the bottom of the receiver and doesn't feed the first round very well at all.  Any tricks you guys have had any luck with?

Don't baby it! Send 'er on home!  ;)

Just give it more of a push and make sure it's seated all the way. It also helps to put the mag in with the bolt open! I've already had the bolt close without picking up a round because it wasn't pushed in all the way.

Clean it very well and give it a shot of dry lube.  I also tweaked the rails that lock it into the stock a little and dry lubed them also.  They do seem to get better as they get some rounds through them and break in a little.

I was hoping it would get better as I shot it and I did notice the first round you have to pretty much jam the bolt forward for it to take the round.  Thanks for the tips, I'll have check and see if there is any obvious tweaking to be done to that dinky clip rail.  Who knows might end up shimming from the Clip Well plate up to the bottom of the receiver so there is no over hang on the inside of the clip well.

It is interesting that this clip is identical to the one in my 70's vintage Savage in the .22 WMR
Spares can be found even at Walmart and they are marked for .17/Wmr. This will not necessarily cure your problem as I have found that the rails & catch to be in need of some tweeking to get rid of the vertical play that lets the clip drop down a hair.

The vertical play is not the issue.  It is solid once i get it in there but it does not go in straight and catches on the underside of the receiver.  Thats the only issue I have with it.

I had the same problem and installing the clip with the bolt open took care of it.

Try a little steel wool to the side tracks of the mag. I also put a tiny bit of Teflon grease in the tracks. I bought it at a bike specialty store about 10 years ago.
