reinventing the wheel: the 50/70 wolf in 500s&w clothing!!!!!
« on: September 22, 2008, 03:10:41 PM »
hi guys  ;D
i have been looking for a low recoil load for  my 500 S&W handi-rifle  mine has a sims pad and a 16 oz mercury recoil dampner in my stock and a game reaper mount with a 1.5x4.5 scope
these loads are so my sick easily beat up buddy can hunt here in indiana with a rifle.  I was sitting here and all of a sudden it hit me !
moto357 sent me some fine shooting pure lead 480 grain 50 cal keith style bevel based bullets lubed with beeswax/mobil 1/lanolin lube to try in my knight muzzleloader sized .501 .503 .504   i have a lee .501 sizer here and i sized the .504 down to .501 used a borebutter soaked homemade wool 1/8 inch thick wonderwad (made 'em in the microwave)and 27.0 grains of AA-5744 it is a 100% + load density barely compressing the charge.
these should bring about 1100-1200 fps @ 16k to 18K max pressures  :o I cannot wait to test them i think recoil will be a push instead of a sharp  rap  i am hoping accuracy is good to boot    LOL  then I realized i  re-invented the 50/70 government  :D with a 1.625 case and a .501 bullet lol     this  struck me as funny as the dickens ;D     so what do you guys think ?   i bet they expand like the dickens in a whitetail  and should pass thru!                              ;D ;D        indydave

They should work fine on deer, just do not push the range very far. It will shoot like a rainbow and loose energy pretty quick. I would feel better if it was hard cast, just in case it hit a shoulder. It should have more knock down power than a standard 45 Colt. There have been plenty of deer taken with the old 44-40 and it will certainly do better than that.

"borebutter soaked homemade wool 1/8 inch thick wonderwad (made 'em in the microwave)" - well aren't we inventive ;D

Kind of funny how them things happen not long ago I had Quick helping me put togeather a 45colt load and when we got done with it seems we pretty much came up with a 360gr 454 casull Buffalo bore bullet of which I had 10 in stock yet from an old Encore bbl can't wait to shoot it out of the BC 45 though. indydave:  i'm right with you with the soft 500 s&w loads.  after several sight in sessions with my 500 encore, i've almost decided to just use a 44 mag.  for some stupid reason i think i need the 500 just in case a deer is gonna be a little farther out there.   i was thinking about using trail boss or titegroup to tone it down a little.  i was also thinking about getting the barnes 275 gr boolits, but those get pretty expensive.
