Future barrel project
« on: September 22, 2008, 01:38:57 PM »
Hey guys and gals I was wondering I have a 45/70 barrel for my handi and a 223 and I really don't care much for the 223 and was wondering if I have it rechambered what you be a good round.  I kinda like bigger chamberings (really want a 9.3x62 or 375 H&H one day) but not sure what route to go eventually.  Any input is welcome like I said its a far off project.

You are talking some big boys there. I could be wrong on this, but I think the pressure on the breech face would be too much with those you mentioned. I am not sure on the 9.3X62, but I know the belted magnums are out. Maybe a 375 Win or a 35 bore of some kind, just thinkin', but kinda tame when compared to the 45-70 when loaded up. You will have to get it bored and re-rifled of course. I do not think a stub project would be a good idea with any high intensity stuff.

If the 223 is also a Handy not sure it will take a 375 H&H but I think Tim has a custom one in a 375 Win.
Theres something about those rimed cases that just apeals to me.

No 375Win, but I do use 375Win brass in my 30-30AI Handi and use 375Win data in my 38-55 Target. Haywire Haywood has the 375Win Handi. My customs are the 405 Winchester that was a 38-55 Target before the rebore and rechamber, a 338-06 A-Square that was a 25-06 Ultra, and the 6.5-55 stub that I recently had made from a donor barrel and a Shilen match blank, as well as a 280 Improved and 35 Remington. The 375H&H would be too much pressure with too big a case head for an SB2 frame, you'd have to stick with non-magnum rifle chamberings to be within the SB2's capabilities.  There are numerous options for a 223 barrel, 225 Winchester and 220 Swift are popular if you don't want to do a rebore which will add $250-$300 to the cost, it just depends on how much money you want to spend, a rebore will get you just about anything that's safe in a Handi.  ;D

Thanks for the input I wasn't really too seriously considering the 375H&H due to I have shot one in a 9# rifle and it kicked with the 300 grain solids pretty good.  Just don't know if there is any .22 caliber I would like to rechamber to the barrel was suppose to be a 243 win but someone at HR sent me a 223 barrel and it took at least 3 months didn't want to send it back now I have a barrel I really don't use.  Anyway enough rambling thanks again

What about a re chamber to 22/250. It would reach out further, and it has been used on goats and pigs. - Pete
