ultra varmint fluted
« on: September 22, 2008, 09:19:25 AM »
I am new to this whole h&r nef thing, I have a few questions.  Does anyone use the Bipod  rail?  If so what Bipod do you use?  I have shot about 100 Round through it and The other day I had better luck hitting P-dogs with my Ruger 10/22  than with the H&R .223.  I thought that the bull barrel in .223 would shoot great but I was missing a lot at about 100-150 yards.  Is it the ammo that I am using, Federal 55 grain hollow point value pack?  I would say that I hit only about half of the P-dog that I shot at With the H&R.  With the ruger I hit nearly all out to about 120 yards.  The h&r was cleaned before going out and I took about 30 shots before cleaning was that the problem?  Any help would be appreciated.

I used the federal to sight in the rifle and the best I was getting was about 1.25'' groups.  I thought that was good enough for p-dogs.

I would group on paper @ 100 yards before I went back out.  The twist rate for that bbl is most likely 1-9" but you should double check using the FAQ section of the forum.  There is a lot of help there.  If it is a 1-9 twist rate then I would try some heavier bullets.  I had lots of luck with black hills match 68 grainers in any of my 1-9 rate twists.  Try a couple different brands and bullet wieghts until you find out what your gun likes best.

I do have some 68 grain  bullets I'll try soon.  I hope that it will group better.  Are the heavy bullets better for 1 in 9 twist barrels?  I have read that I take about 100 rounds to break in a new barrel on a handi.  I have know shot about 160 and It is still no better than the first day out.  I hope that it is just the cheap Ammo

1-9 twist rates seem to like anything from 55-68 or so... anything above or below that they seem to get finicky...

I know both my AR15 and my Stevens 200 .223's ate the 68's with the best results.  But each gun tends to be different.

Good luck!

I learned the hard way...stay away from cheap ammo and get the bullet weight up!

With a 1 to 9 twist  the bullets are spinning at around 350,000 RPM's. The lighter bullets can't seem to stablize and start to break up at that speed. I found that 65gr and better do just fine.

I have been loading my own lately and have several single ragged-hole groups. Also, as was mentioned earlier, read the Handi101 basics section...good stuff there!
