44mag ? (update)
« on: September 19, 2008, 01:50:26 PM »
Ok, so I decided to scrap the 30-30 project, and I went shopping and ran across some 44mags that looked good to me.

One had the newer looking synthetic stocks, and iron sights, and was tagged as an SB2 $249.00

the other had a checkered synthetic stock set, a scope rail instead of irons. this was tagged as an SB1 but the barrel was stamped as an SB2. $219.00

personally I like the latter better, and am thinking of a red dot on it. Just not sure what the difference in the two, is one a newer model or does it even matter?

Just as a side note I ordered a 10ga turkey and made a deal to buy my old 308 bull back for cost  + 10 bucks (paperwork)

Getting the addiction back with a vengence!!  ;D

The SB1 model can only be fitted with shotgun barrels if you're considering other accessory barrels, other than that get the one you like, but consider the SB2 framed model only if it has a serial number prefix of NX , HX, NY or HY,  you don't want if made before 2007, they had a bad rep for inaccuracy due to the large bores, there are too many here that will attest to that.  :-\

thanks for the info,

Ill have to check the reciever tomarrow, the one marked sb1 on the Tag, has sb2 on the barrel, is that something to look out for?

il have to ask if it was a used gun maybe.

Ive never had a 44mag of any kind so this is going to be fun I think

All are/or have always been marked SB2 on the barrel, that's normal for rifle barrels, the SB1 357 and 44mags are new for 2008, dunno if they'll start marking the barrels SB1 or not.

So I take it they've fixed the overbore problem on the 44 mag now?  I'm about 18 months behind on NEF news.

Yes, Marlin started making the barrels in early 2007 after one of their technicians did a little reading here about the poor bores and they tightened them up, this happened the same time they changed the twist rate on the reintroduced .444 from 1:38 to 1:20", too bad they didn't do the same for the 44mag, but 1:38" is the SAAMI spec for the .44mag. :-\

The 44mags? any others? I have a 44mag , unsure what year it was made but certainly before 2007.
Unknown about other folks but mine with cast and irons makes ragged holes at 50yds and with xtp's and a scope does well but not as well matter of fact , this was actually my 1st handi

well I checked the serial numbers and its a new gun (thanks Tim!)

I got the sb1 model just because I will not swap the barrels around on this one and I liked the stock alot better.

Got it home and slapped on a burris 2.5 shotgun scope on it, and let me tell ya its a sweet little package for sure. should get me out to 100yds im hoping.

I also went and picked up my old .308 survivor, payed what I got for it, my gunguy was just happy to get it back to me, Knew I wanted it back so its been sitting in an office for awhile so It wouldnt get sold  :D

Deer season is going to be xtra fun this year and going to go and warm em up (hopefully) with a few coyotes, and since the 10ga will be here on tuesday my wife will be so sick of me and my guns that she will beg me to go away for a few days! ;D

any more tips on these babies would be great

thanks again guys

Since you got the SB1 frame I would not think about reaming to 445 Super Mag either.

nah didnt even cross my mind, already have a .45-70 marlin, so I wouldnt even need one.

I most likely wont even get another barrel for this, just because its easier to just buy a whole gun.

would be cool to have a barrel made for a 221 fireball though.
