I have a question about 270 Win trajectory.
« on: August 03, 2003, 03:11:52 AM »
Hello, I am new to the forum and am looking foward to talking to everyone. I am use to shooting and hunting with a marlin 30/30 but it was recently stolen. I now have an Encore in 270 Win. I have it sighted in at 100 yards using Federal Premium 150 Gr. BTSP bullets. I can fire nickel size groups on target at 100 yards but when I take a shot at a target at 25 yards the round is very high. I have to aim 2 or 3 inches below to hit the target. This is not good for a Deer rifle in Arkansas. I am using a Burris 3x9x40 Fullfield II scope. Should I sight -in at 50 yards or is somthing else wrong?

bassmaster, are you dead on the bull at 100 yards?  If so, there is no way a .270 SHOULD be 2-3" high at 25 yards.
Something is not computing.  The arc of the trajectory should be very flat and your rise above line of sight should never be that much at any distance with a 100 yard zero.  If anything, I would have expected POI to be a little low at 25 yards.

Underclocked, Im sorry that I was not able to respond sooner. Yes dead on at 100 Yards. There is something that I failed to mention. I was shooting from a from a vise that was clamped at the very front of the forend but when I shot at the 25 yard target I was using a sand bag rest. I still don't see how this would change the shot that much but my barrel is not free floated. Could the vise make that big of a differance?

yep, you're eliminating the effects of recoil in a vise, or atleast reducing it. That's why you are printing high at 25 with out. Onesonek

Onesonek, I called you today but you were not home. Sorry that I missed you. I will go to the range this weekend and sight in at 100 yards using the sand bags. I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks for your help.

Sorry I missed you too! It's County Fair time, so I was out awhile. Try what a few others mentioned, at sighting in at 25 first.  Good Luck! onesonek
