17 HMR, finally
« on: September 16, 2008, 04:30:09 PM »
Had a pretty good weekend. Got the T/C Omega sighted in and had time to play with the .17 HMR again.   I had sort of pushed it to the back burner, as the first attempt was total chaos.  Couldn't catch paper at less than 20 yards.   This was the result of a really bad scope.  Made an adjustment after 3 rounds and never could catch up to it.   That scope ended up as a paperweight/training tool so all wasn't lost.   Anyway, put new glass on it and set it in the corner.  So figured if I had the time I would try again.   Had it sort of boresighted, so didn't take but a few rounds to dial in.  Wow, could this be the same rifle?  I know the HMR is a very accurate round as I have a bolt rifle, but this was a H&R after all.  Pretty much factory except for the Choate stock.  Trigger is OK, but not super crisp.  It was almost like shooting a laser...anything out to 100 yards was way too easy.   Nothing furry was out & about where I was at, so had to settle for metal, and that was asking too much of a 17 grain bullet.   Does make a cute donut mark on a steel target, but just couldn't get a knockdown.   But it was a blast.   May even have to rethink the HM2, as I was about to put it in the disposable inventory category.  But it actually has a better trigger than the HMR.  Something about watching the bullet get there through the scope with virtually no recoil.   What a hoot...try it, you will like it!!

Glad to hear it worked out , I ran into the same problem with my 22 mag only I was 1200 miles from home at a P-dog shoot . A lot of guys had the little 17 there and it is a great round for them out to 200 yards .

I got mine dialed in last weekend, and it's a hoot ot shoot.  It's a Handi bull synthetic with a Bushnell Banner 3-9x50  I am awed by what that little pop gun can do!  I've found it's dead on at 40 and 100, so it isn't much off on anything in between.  When this wind lays down, I'll see what it does at 200.  I had a Marlin 50M .22 mag that I sold last year.  I'd made some really nice shots with that rifle, but I just didn't like the feel of it, and it always looked and felt lacking.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

The HM2 is pretty much GTG, now the HMR is back in good graces.  Next up is the 22 mag ultra that needs glass, then comes the .243 and .then the .204.   Well  you can see where this is heading.   then there is the bolt guns that have been sorely neglected since this single shot fever swept in.    If the wind isn't blowing, the 17s are good to 200 easy.  Wonder if the boys in green will consider their fireball calibers in the H&R line.   That will remain to be seen   For now, I gotta start stocking up on HMR and probably 22 Mag again.   Still some dog towns around that have seen nothing but 22 rimfires.

I bought my HMR way back when they first offered them. I LOVE the accuracy!! Out of the box mine was a shooter, my only problem was occasional misfires. I sent it back to H&R for a MRII barrel and to fix the problem. Now I have two GREAT shooters!!  I love them so much I sold my 22Mag ultra barrel and dedicated its frame to the MRII.

The 17 MRII is far and above the most accurate rim-fire cartridge I have ever fired. Probably more than 50 people have shot it and all say the same thing its unbelievable how well this gun shoots. I will never sell this or my 357 maxi handi, ever, period.

Good luck with yours, GREAT to hear you love it as I do!!
