Fast value opinion
« on: September 16, 2008, 07:19:43 AM »
I just came accross a BC with an extra factory fitted 38/55 barrel for $510.  Is this a good deal.
I really need your opinion as I need to move fast on this.

I did a google shop check and the average price for a BC ran 364.90
That leaves the 38/55 bbl @ 145.10

I don't think you'd be getting hammered too bad...

You didn't mention the sights. That could make a big difference.

It's probably cheaper than you could buy one and ship it back for a barrel to be fitted and return to you for. From what I've read here tho the older .38-55 barrels are less desireable than the newer ones so when it was delivered might also be a factor in such a decision.

I should add that they both have the peeps and the lyman fronts.  I don't when the 38.55 barrel was made and neither does the dealer.

Chances are it's an older barrel, but if you handload for it and have the necked reamed, the 38-55 will be a good shooter with properly sized cast bullets. From a recent report from a member that ordered a 38-55 accessory barrel, they are no longer available. So if you want it, better get it while you can, the price is right, it would cost that much if you ordered one now that Remington has increased the prices on acc barrels and shipping. Some Sportsman's Warehouses may still have the 38-55 Target in stock, I paid $320 new for mine in February there, the one before that was $299. They sell the BC for $350, Bud's sells it for $356 shipped.

I just talked to the dealer who told me that he ordered the barrel for the owner about a year and a half ago. It is quite possible that it is a post 2007 one.  I am going to pick it up for $500 shipped.  I think that all things considered, it is a pretty good deal.  I have over 100 38.55 rounds plus that much brass at home as well.

Who knows maybe I will have the 45.70 barrel shortened by 4-6".  I would like to tromp around with it for a while first.

Good decision! You'll pretty much know if you want to shorten the 45-70 barrel, the 38-55 barrel is 28" and a good compromise. One member here had his BC barrel cut to 27" and loves it.  ;)
