Sick and tired reading about "new rifles'
« on: September 12, 2008, 08:38:53 AM »
Always something new in the gun rags, mostly about bolt actions. Whats new about them ? a slight modification and it's a NEW rifle. Why don"t these guys write about how to fix some old rifles, then they will be new. Like how to get a Win.100 to shoot accurately,no jams or auto fires. or How to put a sling on a Rem.7600 without attaching it to the bbl. or how to accurize a model 99 or 88 Win. or how to refinish a stock without a lot of hoo-do and actually name producs they use and how. Also how to lighten the old one( pretty hard to beat a Savage 99 F)
Oh heck I'm just tired of sitting here and watching it rain and I'm grumpy as I don"t have a place to deer hunt this fall. Couldn"t afford to buy gas to get there if I did ! >:(

Well I'm not grumpy should be a great hunting season coming up, but what was it 3 - 4 years ago I sure got tired of the gun rags being full of nothing but the newest hottest auto handgun. Seems like there was at least a couple a month to get all excited about if you like autos, which I don't.

Years ago, I used to anxiously await each each new gun rag in the mail. Then realized that most were just marketing vehicles for companies. So I let my subscriptions expire and went online to the Forums. Best dang advice ever came, was from youse guys on the forums. Country boy, if you're anywhere near Wyoming, give a holler.

Like any other business, if it wasn't for the "new" stuff, they'd all be out of business.  Sometimes it's the new ones that get people that otherwise may not be interested in hunting/shooting to take a 2nd look and try it out.

Keep in mind that at one time, even our favorite "old" guns were the "new" stuff.  Generations from now, the "new" stuff we don't care too much about will be the "old" favorites.

Carl, we are buckling down for the remnants of Ike headed our way.  Our ground is pretty well saturated so I'm not sure what we are going to do with several inches of new rain.
My latest "new" rifle purchase was a 1981 model 70 that I bought from a friend of mine as part of her dad's estate.  The rifle was brand new, never shot!  Her dad had bought a number of rifles as an investment over the years and when she told me about this one I couldn't pass it up.  It was the last year they were made by Winchester Repeating Arms.  I've scoped it and shot it a little, and it's a keeper.  The action is tight and the trigger is crisp and it shoots pretty much every load I've tried.  I might take it on our Manitoba hunt next spring.
If you want to drive to Arkansas I'm sure I can find some time for some deer hunting.  Let me know.
Blessings,
Rev

Well country boy, sounds like your all healed up from your surgery and getting anxious to head for deer camp. Seams you have some good offers. You'l need more than truck gas money to hunt up here (read airfare) but you'd be welcome.

Got up this morning to thick ground fog. Couldn't even see the bay 50 yds from my front porch. Guess Its a good day to read. But like some of you I don't subscribe to many of the gun mags. I do have a few new books I picked up on my last visit to the big city of Anchorage.

Hope you get that hunting itch scratched. Byron

Advertising dollars, it's why a subscription is a few bucks. The makers of elbow grease and logical thought have no advertising budget, therefore most of there solutions are found on the inter nets.

I like Rifle, Handloading, and The Backwoodsman.  They are worth reading.  They usually feature stuff on older guns.

I subscribe to riflemagazine.com and receive them in pdf file format, really cool.
They always run new and old cartridges and guns.

Being a NRA member I also get the American Hunter magazine.

I have in the past subscribed to Peterson hunting until I noticed they re-run the same articles all the time, that sucks, they suck.  I will not read their mags again.

I believe it is Wolf publishing that puts out Rifle and Handloading magazines. They were about the best of the lot at least when I was a subscriber.

RIFLE and HANDLOADER are excellent magazines, and I think that they've got the best offering of writers available. For a short time they also put out a magazine called SUCCESSFUL HUNTER.  I haven't seen any of them lately, but it was a good read as well.  I'll have to get on their site and see if they still have it.

They were a LOT better before they hired Venturino and turned him loose to write half of each issue. He and I have darn little interests in common so his stuff is just wasted space for me. If it continues I might not even bother to renew next time my subscription is up.

If you haven't looked at Backwoodsman, I'd urge you to take a look.  It isn't flashy, but I bet a lot of you would really like it.  I read it cover to cover.

Yeah, sometimes I just skip over his stuff.  Some of it's ok, as I definitely get to target shoot much more than I get to hunt (well, I used to, this year's not been good for either).  But I'm not into the Sharps/Ballard/various other 1800's rifles too much.

I don't subscribe to it, but I am an avid "grocery store magazine rack" reader of it, when they have it.  I do that with several of my favorite mags, beats following my wife around the store bored to death.  It's a really neat little magazine.

I get all 3 magazines, its a good price and my wife loves it that they aren't stacked all over the house.

Wolfe Publishing still has Successful Hunter.

I must agree with those of you that like Backwoodsman. I reciently found it and subscribed. That and The double gun journal and Sporting Classics are all I subscribe too any more. And of course I get the American Rifleman with my NRA membership. Byron

That's rather misleading. You can't buy all three for that price it's that price per each rag not for all three. I've been a subscriber to them way too long to believe you're gonna get then at less than 1/3 the normal rate. No I didn't click the link but they are not into giving anything away at Wolfe.

OK I went and clicked and now see what's going on. That's getting it online not in hard copy. Thanks but no thanks.

Yes Sir, they are in PDF format, I can carry them with my laptop everywhere I go.

I can print out any article or load data that I want to keep on hand for easy access.
