223 wssm

Just got a new 223 wssm .Got it from a friend. Just like to know if anyone has any good load data and if it is good Florida deer and hogs?

I am afraid that I don't have any load data for you. The 223wssm does seem like a great varmint cartridge but a medium game cartridge it is not. The problem that you will find is that most bullits for the 223 are frangible, and not designed to penetrate. Penetration is what you need for both deer and hogs. I am not saying that it cant be done but I don't think that it should be done. If those are the two animals that you hunt the most, I would suggest trading that rifle in on something in the 25 cal or larger.

Have a friend that shot a 240 lb. hog with a .223 wssm, winchester factory load, at 287 yards hit it about 4" behind the ear and it was DRT.  Of course with hogs its where you hit 'em and one dead hog is not a lot of experience with the wssm.  I center punched one with a 30/06 here in the Texas brush country and it ended with a 150 yd. tracking job in the thick south Tx. brush, which is no fun.  I learned to keep the shots from the front shoulder forward.  All being said and my 2 cents worth is, I would go to a larger cal. for hogs and deer.  I think that the .223 wssm is a great varmint round.

What twist is your barrel ? if your going to handload a bullet such as the 70 grain speer semi spitzer will do the job

It a Winchester black shadow. Not to shore on the twist. I do have dies and bass, like to load heavy. Thanks for the tips inrut24/7. Stexhunter, I have take'n hogs with my old 222 so really I think this will be a good hog getter.

The 223wssm has a standard twist of 1-10" twist. You should be able to stablize a long 69gr. target bullet with no problem. I would load any of the barnes X or triple shocks, what ever they're called now. Don't forget the 60 gr partition they should do well also. I've killed deer with a 22-250 and the barnes x and it performed a lot better than a 22 caliber should. If you use your 223 wssm for big game use the best bullets available(no varmint bullets) and it'll be fine. I have a 223 wssm winchester featherweight but I haven't turned it loose on big game, maybe this fall. I'm sure it will hit a little harder than my 22-250 and thats pretty good.
