Sportster Stock Removal
« on: September 10, 2008, 11:36:11 AM »
Before I get really mad and start cuttin' stuff apart, how do you get the stock off a Sportster .22, and
will a "standard" Handi wood stock fit the gun?
I have taken the butt pad off, and can see the bolt, but all of my sockets are too big to get down thru the hollow in the
black plastic stock!
I've changed stocks on dozens of Handi's, but am getting very flusterated at this one!
I just don't care for the plastic stock, and have a wood stock with a schnable forend I want on my .22.

Thanks

alan

Thin wall socket or cheap socket + grinder is the answer ;)

I would like to see[get} a Sportster stock set ,so if you can  get it off w/o a bandsaw, let me know. Can you get a 1/2" socket in to the bolt head? If it will reach that far without binding on the inner surface of the stock tube but it's too small to fit the hex -head of the bolt, get an el cheapo 9/16" socket and grind it down. I've done this with Survivor stocks with very little grinding of the socket . If you taper the grind ,you can take the socket wall down to the hex grooves and still have enough "meat" in the socket to take a stock bolt off. A hex -head socket works better than a 12 pt. If it is a squeeker and you don't want to have to keep that socket in a special place, replace the bolt with an Allen-head bolt, but then you'll still have to have a "special tool" . Boring the access tube is up to you, I won't go there!   Ken
