Just got my first NEF in 22-250. Love it I told my brother not to even bother looking at one because you'll want one. Sure enuff he came home with a .223. I warned him. Anyways my question is , is there any way to help with the recoil jump ? It has a little more then I was expecting. Any tricks I should know about?

You can fill the hollow part of the buttstock with lead shot.

Tell ya what you do there Slick... Since you love your Handi - don't we all - go get yo'sef another one; this time in 45/70! Then get young Master Tyke to recommend some handloads for you to try... This might give you a new perspective on the recoil issue...

I think the OP wants to reduce muzzle jump so the target can be seen at impact, something not likely to happen with a 22-250, weight at the forend would be better advice IF the forend stud was attached better, but it's not, so that's not such good advice. Best advice is to add a 204 Ruger accessory barrel instead of weight to the butt stock.

I know puny .250 and I'm talking about recoil. But quickdtoo was right I was expecting to see my shots is all.

If you do have a swivel stud are you using a bipod attached to it? (Wal-mart here carries a decent one for around $45, or hit cabelas or midwayusa) If not consider it. The extra weight will help and you get a steadier rest up front. After that its down to weight in the stock etc.

Gotta be honest never seen a 223 jump enough to be a problem, but then again I have never shot one in a handi rifle.

I guess I never worried a bunch about recoil in my .22-250. It does jump a little, but if I'm shooting 2 or 3 hundred yards, I can usually see the bullet hit. Mine is a synthetic stock, and I may put a little lead in it, not as much as I put in my "06, but perhaps a pound. or 12 oz. Or, I may just put a wood stock on it and be about the right weight.....perhaps.

My 223 does better if I use the bipod and put a 1/2 pound in the stock.
What scope do you have? Have you tried turning it down a little?
Turning the power down increases the field of view.

I don't think the muzzle jump is that bad, just focus on you non dominant eye right after shooting to see all the action downrange!

Drill some holes around the top of the barrel at the muzzle, that will help keep it from jumpin' around.

seriously - Many people add a muzzle break to reduce muzzle jump in varmint rifles for the very reason you described, not to reduce recoil.

I don't think I want to drill any holes in the barrell.I will try a bi-pod and maybe a little weight in the stock.

If you add weight make sure its in the butt not the forarm ( very BAD ) also you could have a break added that has a directional porting to keep the jump down but ne warned it's LOUD .

I think turning down the power on the scope is the best and easiest idea. I think that is probably why I see most of my bullets strike out of all the calibers I shoot at distance. I always use the lowest possible power for better clarity, light, faster target acquisition and field of view.

You are NOT gonna see the bullet impact on an NEF .22-250 PERIOD. Nice if possible but ain't gonna happen. Really even with my R700 Varmint with huge honking full bull 26" barrel and a gross weight close to twelve pounds I pretty much can't. Now with my .17 Fireball that's a whole different story.

I agree with GB also Tim about the only one I get a good impact sight on is my 204 I don't have the 22-250 but I got 225win bull and the 223 bull and at those ranges I don't see it happening and if ya screw up with the weight in the forearm you will tear off the the screw mount from the bbl. Kurt

Put a dang brake on it, that's about the only way to see hits. Or dig some holes to put your bipod feet in and then cover them up a bit.

There is always the old standby , chain it down to a D9 cat , that should hold it just fine .

I can't see the hits with mine either so I just live with it or get a spotter .

I have a .223 sprlight, and i filled the plastic stock with as much shot as it would hold (its quite a bit I would say at least 5lbs!). I wanted to see prarie dogs flip up and out of the scope! and this did help alot! Hope this helps ya bud.

Now this brings another question up. If you welded the barrel lug, you could add all the weight you wanted to the forearm couldnt you? I might have my neighbor weld my lug if this is the case. then itl be rock solid!

I think what I'll do is start with the 10ga,12ga then the 300 ultra , 7 mm, .270 buy the time I get to the .250 it'll seem like a bb gun.

I suggest 45-120 if you want to get accustomed to recoil. When shooting from the bench without a lead sled make sure the hammer doesn't eat your cheek.

Some people have other guns that arn't handis.

Be very careful welding on a good barrel. It would be very easy to ruin it.
A barrel band would take the stress off of the stud all togather. Much easier to fix later if you don't like it too.

I missed a crow this morning with the .22-250 at about 325 yards...pilot error. He was broadside and the bullet passed over his shoulders by what I would guess 3 or 4 inches and tore up alfalfa, rainwater and dirt. Could it be I saw that because I shoot with both eyes open?
