Bisley S.B. hunter or regular S. B. hunter ??
« on: September 07, 2008, 03:55:32 AM »
Morning Gentleman ,   I'm considering a Bisley Super Blackhawk Hunter . I didn't realize Ruger still makes a "standard grip frame" Super Blackhawk Hunter.  ( for clarification , I'm speaking of the 7 1/2 inch SS model with full upper rib, with the ring mount machined into the rib ).  I've pretty much been a DA revolver man , owning several Super Redhawks and Redhawks, with a Ruger S.S. Single Six being the only single action exception.  My question is, besides the obvious difference in grip angle and appearance , are they're any advantages to one or the other ??  I thought I found what I wanted at a local gunshop...a SS Hunter with the rings ( no box or other accessories ) for 500 bucks......that's when I realized , after closer inspection , that it was a standard Super Blackhawk Hunter .  ( in SS, with the upper rib machined for the rings )  Anyone , I'm looking for opinions.....before I plop my hard earned cash down.   Thanks, irold

I'm clearly NOT a Ruger fan but in chosing one I'd ALWAYS choose Bisley over the standard grip frame.

Seems most that can comfortably hold the Bisley style prefer it with the heavier recoiling loads.  I like both but greatly prefer the feel of of the Bisley grip frame.  The hammer and trigger on the Bisley models is also differnt.  The triggers have more curve and the hammers are lower.

You need to handle (and preferrably, shoot) both to decide. To show you how subjective this is, unlike Graybeard, I'd NEVER choose the Bisley grip over the regular grip !

I have a Bisley .45 Colt that is now in the hands of my gunsmith for a trigger, front sight and other work.
I would not invest this in a standard frame. I love the Bisley grip and IMHO does handle recoil much better.

I have 21 RUGER BLACKHAWKS in different configurerations.
I like both styles, but prefer the BISLEY.
I'm not real crazy over the SUPER BLACKHAWKS.
The old style squared off trigger guard bites into my fingers with the heaver loads.
I have a full collection of every two cylinder blue model BLACKHAWK ever made.
I have two sets of consecutive serial # limited editions.
I am having one of my 45 colt BISLEYS customized right now by JOHN GALLAGER with a custom 5.5" octagon barrel along with all of the extras.

I do like my RUGERS.

 1- 45 colt/45acp Blackhawk
 2- 45 colt/45acp Bisley
 3- 44mag/44-40 Blackhawk
 4- 38-40/10mm Blackhawk
 5- 32-20/32H&R mag Blackhawk
 6- 357/9mm Blackhawk
 7- 22lr/22mag Blackhawk
 8- 45 colt Bisley Vaquero   x2
 9- 44mag IMSA SILHOUETTE 1 of 500 10.5" Super Blackhawk
10- 44mag Super Blackhawk 10.5" barrel w/ 2x7x32 scope
11- 44mag Blackhawk
12- 44mag Vaquero
13- 44-40 Vaquero
14- 41mag Blackhawk   x2
15- 30 carbine Blackhawk
16- 357 max Blackhawk
17- 17HMR Blackhawk
18- 22lr Bearcat
19- 22lr old moder three screw flat top
20- 38-40/40 s&w SS Vaquero set consecutive serial # limited
      edition  only 500 made
21- 40 s&w SS Vaquero set consecutive serial # limited edition
      only 200 made

I have been thinking about getting one done in 327 HORNADY.
All but the limited editions I have used in the past.
My favorates are the 45 colt Bisleys and the 38-40, 44-40 & 32-20 in that order.
As you can see I speak from experience.
Get it, you will enjoy it.

Ken is of course right and it is a very personal thing what works for each of us. Trying each preferably on the range not just in the store is the right way to decide what is best for you. Some times I tend to forget not everyone likes what I do. I can't imagine why they don't.  :o
