What is your biggest cat? What kind of cat was it? Mine is a 30 lb. blue that I caught this summer. I have also caught a 17 lb. flathead and a number of 10 -12 lbers. I don't catch a lot of big ones cause I usually fish for channel cats.

My biggest was a 30lb channel.  You can see a picture of it on the "mothers day madness" thread.  I owe it to the best fisherman I know and my best buddy SHB who took me to his favorite hog holes.

John, how about a little bit of the story behind your big ol' 70lb flathead.  I don't think I'm alone when I say I would be very interested in hearing all about it.  Maybe your story will help me catch one that big.

Hahaha......did I tell you fellas I used to be a noodler? That's how I got the 70 pounder, didn't catch it on rod-n-reel.

I also got flatheads that weighed in the 50's and 60's in my noodling days.

I did take a picture of the one that was in the 70's, but the roll got exposed and ruined. I had two fellas in the boat with me when I caught it, and I weighed it on some cotton scales at a little antique store that was in the town of Foyil back then.....was around 14 years ago. The folks that had the store are still in Foyil, Finis and Louise Ward, Louise owned the antique store. I don't remember who else saw the fish. They were some locals from the filling station across the street.

The fish had been out of the water for a couple of hours when I weighed it, and it was just a bit over 70 pounds. There were some fellas across the street at the local filling station that came over to see the fish....I had a couple of others as well that were in the 30-40 pound range. Before we weighed it they were askin me how much it would go.....I thought it might go 60 something, and they thought it was bigger.....before they were through guessing they had it up to 90 pounds.

When we were leaving I told my friend Bob Rogers, who, along with his son Trent, they both live up north of Chelsea, Bulletmaker, were the ones with me, that we shouldn't have weighed it. Ole Bob asked me why not, and I said that those local boys would have it up to 100 pounds by now and we would be legends.

Bob's son Trent kept the head in his freezer for several years to show to his buddies......that head was huge.

I do have pics of a couple of good flatheads that I could show ya Bulletmaker, and when ya come to the house I'll be happy to do that. One was 59 pounds and the other was 63 pounds.

I do have some pictures posted on a site called the Catfish Message Board. I post as John on there and the pics are on the pics page. These are flatheads that are from my spring limblines. I catch flats in the 40-50 pound range about every spring on my limblines.

My goal is to catch a 50 pound blue on rod and reel.....so far that hasn't happened.
Hey, hold my beer and watch this.

Hi John :D
Yea, I can make it now. My wife has been in the St. Johns hospital, for cancer. Thank God and a lot of prayers, she didn`t have cancer, but she did have a fungus on her lungs, that could lead to cancer. The operation is the same and worse that open heart surgery. She has pulled through like a champ even though at one time they killed her by giving her Iodine and drugs that drivre from shell fish which she is allergic to and we told them 1000 times. Anyhow got her home now and when she gets better, I`ll be up to see the catfish pictures and shoot some ammo.
By the way, the doctor said that anybody can get fungus on the lungs, it`s in the air we breath.   The most people that get exposed, is people mowing lawns, farmers that plow and disck the ground kicking up the dust, cleaning out chicken houses, etc. so be careful and wear a mask.
see ya later

Hey Bulletmaker, sorry to hear about your wife's illness, but good to hear she pulled through it. Hope she gets well soon.

We had a little scare with my mother-in-law a couple of weeks back, congestive heart failure and pneumonia, but she came through that and is doing fine now.

We should be able to do some shooting soon. The ticks and chiggers will thin out with some cooler weather, and then we'll get together.

I have another pistol that I haven't shot yet, a 45 auto.

Hey daddy rog, welcome to the forum. Here's my my first moderation:

nobody can brag anymore unless they share the exciting story of their catch along with the bragging.  The only thing better than learning something new on a forum is hearing a good story, and we as fishermen have a long and proud heritage to live up to as story tellers.

So with that in mind lets hear the possibly exciting and or informative story behind the catching of your 48 lb blue daddyrog. I would love to hear it.

Hey single shot, welcome! How big of a city lake do you have. Do any of the ordinary citizens  even know there are flatheads in it?

The lake is fairly good size but a little smaller than Bluestem over by Pawhuska. And I sure hope that not many of the other locals discover the size of the flatheads in this lake. I myself only take two or three out of the lake each year because I want them to alway's be there. the little lake gets way to much pressure. Won of our locals had a TV show and told everyone that it was the best thing since sliced bread so now intead of a couple of boats on it on any given sat. ther may be 8 or 9. It's a shame that most of the people around here do not understand the catch and release idea they all go by the catch and cook idea. I also have caught a 10# largemouth and a 6# smallmouth in this lake, took pictures and had a reproduction mount done.

Two years ago I caught a 15 lb flathead on a top-water grasshopper lure while bass fishing on a local lake near my home. I was using an ultra-lite reel with 6 lb test line. That opp isn't the biggest cat I've ever had my hands on, but for sure one I'll never forget.

My biggest one was a 28 # channel, caught out of a tiny little farm pond...never would have dreamed there was a fish in there that size.

my super-secret high tech bait: Dove guts!!!!

we made an early dove hunt, cleaned our birds by the pond and set up tp dp some fishing, and caught a bunch of small crappie / bass on jigs & beetle spins. As an afterthought, i baited up a hook with a big wad of bird guts, thinking i might get a catfish. Boy was i right...hooked that fish on a flimsy crappie pole , and after hooking him i could tell he was not a typical farm pond channel cat...just set the drag loose and played tug of war for half an hour. when he ran, the drag slipped...but in a 3/4 acre farm pond with no cover to speak of, he couldnt go far. finally got him in the shallows and waded in to grab him. that was 20 years ago...and i still have not had as much fun catching a catfish as that one. maybe i better go back to using bird guts again, i have not caught another cat that big on a pole since then!

I will look for the pic my father had taken with an 87lb yellow he caught years ago in a hoop next on the Brazos river in Tx. Him and my grandfather ran a 2"x2" through his gills to hold him up. They were both at least 6' tall to use as scale. He nailed the fish to a tree to clean it. I remember the fish whipped his taill hard enough to throw my father back a few ft. I doubt I will be able to beat his record, but I will die trying. My biggest yellow is 48lbs. Channel 8lbs.
I'm not fishing anymore, but I'm not fishing any less...

Biggest blue I landed has been 17lbs.  Biggest channel is 15 lbs. Biggest flathead was 25lbs.   I've hooked flatheads over 50 lbs several times in the local river, but I got my butt whipped every time.  I've seen them, never managed to get one in the net though.  Biggest one I've tangled with was probably in South Carolina about 11 years ago, at Santee Cooper.  I was staying on the Diversion Canal,  fishing by myself one night while everyone else was inside playing cards.  I had a 7ft heavy action rod, Garcia 7000 with 60lb test, 8/0 hook.  I was half asleep when the reel sounded off.  I set the hook and fought that fish for an hour, the whole time I was yelling at the cabin for someone to bring me a net, but they never heard me.  Eventually, it broke my line close to the bank.  I know it was a monster, I was using a 12" live herring for bait.  A couple of days later, a guy caught a big blue that weighed close to 80lbs on a limb line at the camp next to ours......it still had my hook and the broken line hanging from the corner of its mouth.    :(
