I can't use my .44 mag dies for .444? I always thought .444 was a straight case, no taper, and therefore I could use my .44 mag dies.!!!

There's a big difference is case size between the 44mag and 444, you may be able to neck size tho.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this but doesn't the mirror method work only if the scope is of good enough quality to ensure the scope tube is at right angle to the mirror.

Some of the less expensive scopes have a plastic ring at the front that allows the scope tube to sit at a slight angle.  At least this has been my experience using this method.

That would be true if the objective bell isn't square to the scope tube, but that would be the exception, I've got 60 some scopes, none are like that. There have been a few scopes that the reflected image was too dim to see, but placing a piece of glass between the bell and the mirror solved that issue.  ;)
