I couldn't help myself again - got a new gun.
« on: July 31, 2003, 07:33:48 AM »
Okay, this is going to be the LAST gun I buy for at least a long while.   I swear, I keep on saying this, but I keep on finding rifles that "I've always wanted."

Here is what I got:

http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=10730038

It's a Sako 75 Stainless Synthetic in 7mm-08.  Granted, I already have a Remington BDL SS DM in 7mm-08, but I've always wanted a Sako.  Yes, I just absolutely love my Tikkas, but I wanted to buy a rifle from it's parent company - Sako.  I'm very excited about this rifle.

As for the cartridge, 7mm-08 is, what I believe to be, THE ULTIMATE cartridge for whitetails.  It's a light recoiling round, yet has surprising performance on game out to about 250 or 300 yards (even though I rarely shoot anyting past 150 yards).

As for the rifle AND the cartridge, I've always wanted the Sako SS in 7mm-08, but I could never find it for under $1,000.

The price was $900 which is a great price for a NIB Sako Stainless Synthetic.  The best part is that it includes free Sako Opti-Lock rings and bases, which cost about $150.

Okay guys, you all have to help me out here.  Next time I consider buying another rifle, you guys have to have to tell me "NO!"

What do you guys, especially Sako owners, think of the gun?

I know to feeling---I currently have 3 on lay-a-way---and that's after I told myself--no more.

A .30-06 just the other day---the cheap price---24in barrel---and Federal High Energy loads---got me to thinking I could have a .300 Win mag(or nearly so)--at less cost---and more versitile--available and cheaper ammo. It's a Winchester Black Shadow for $375.

I know I've been ragging on Winchester-----but at this cheap price--I can afford to fix any problems------first thing to do when I get it  home is to work my trigger magic on it---then go from there. BTW--I consider the push feed a superior design----case head is completely covered and a more rigid receiver. Controlled round only comes into play with .338 or bigger---unless you have a great fear of Bambi eating you or something.

I am glad to see that you guys have the bug as well, it makes me feel better.  I too decided it was time for a Sako.  Almost bought a Beretta Mato, but bought a stainless/synthetic Sako 75 in 300 ultra mag instead.  You got a better deal, I paid $925.00 new in box with NO rings.  Congrats!!!!!!!!

Longwinter's comments on the other posts reassured my thoughts about Sako, had to have one THANKS :D

I'm glad I'm not the only one that keeps finding gaps that NEED(?) filling in the gun safe(s).  Got everything covered then a gap appears and the bank account takes another hit.  In my case I just found and made an offer on a NIB Weatherby Mark V Deluxe .378 Weatherby Magnum.  Now it's up to the owner.  Another gap filler.  When is it goingto end.  Lawdog

If you have a hobby and it,s not costing you money, then your not doing it right.I have an older SAKO an I would love to own a 75 but at NZ prices I
will have to wait a bit.I am a long time fan of the .308 but this 7mm08
is currently the best seller in NZ.must be a good reason for it so you enjoy
and don,t foget to tell us about your next rifle.

I have the same thing in a .243 and I am quite fond of it. One of the few guns I didn't have to tweak to get the accuracy out of it. Shoots near 1/4" moa. There is something special abount owning a Sako 75. It puts a smile on your face for a long time. I paid  $1035 and another $80 for the rings and that was about 3 years ago. you got a good deal.

You got a terrific deal.  I friend of mine paid a LOT more for his in .300 Ultra Mag.  But he ordered it with a muzzle brake and a fancy double set trigger.  But does it ever shoot!!!  I had to try it myself to see if he was BS'n me or not.  I shot a 5-shot group that was a hair less than 1/2" center-to-center with it using full power loads.  I was amazed.   :o

I've got an older Sako L-61R in .30-06 that's a terrific shooter too.  And I've got two Swede Mausers made by Sako, one in 1907 and the other in 1945.  And they both shoot 1 1/8" groups with iron sights and military surplus ammo.  They are all fitted and finished like Swiss watches.  Everybody needs to own at least one Sako.

Yep, I am jealous.  If I could pick a new rifle right now, it would be the 7M-08 in a Tikka Delux or a Sako.  I have a Sako in 7MM stainles/walnut.  Isnt it nice to get that new rifle out of the box and see the piece of paper between the barrel and the stock (free floated). I think the Sako synthetic stock is the nicest out there with the Weatherby very close. I think this one will be a real joy for you to shoot and hunt with. :D

I have a Sako 75 in .30-06,  Blue and walnut.  It is a wonderful shooting rifle.  I will buy more, if I find ones I want.  Highly recommended.  I bought mine used for $500, in around 99% condition.   I made a good deal.

I have not run across any SAKO made Swedes before. All I"ve seen have been Carl Gustav or Husqvarna.  I sure do love my M-38, 1942 date. It was made the same year I was. If you have Swedes, hold on, the prices are going up out of sight. I guess we bragged on them too much. :toast:

Zachary -

I know what you mean. I have said those very words to myself several times in the last year. However, I stopped by a local Wal-Mart on Wednesday to pick-up some dog food. Went by the sporting goods department to see if a friend was working. He was and he showed me a Weatherby Vanguard Sporter (walnut stock version) in .300 Weatherby that he had just put on display. He said rifle had been in the storage area for over 2 years. I jokingly asked how much he would knock off the price to take that "old thing" off his hands. His manager piped in that he would reduce the price by by $100.00 just to get it out of inventory. Sold! Test target measures less than 3/4".
