What are some of the best bases for a blackhawk?
« on: August 20, 2008, 10:26:18 AM »
I'm looking for some bases for my 4 5/8 blackhawk in 45 colt.  I'm looking at the weaver that clamp on.(I've heard some good and bad).  So do any of you have any opinions on this mount.  I've also looked at the weigand and other bases that required the gun getting drilled out for the bases.  I've not ruled them out yet, unless some of you think this is the best way to go.  I'm using 20.0 gr. of 2400 with a 250 xtp, probably fixing to drop down to 19.5 or so.  Is this load stout enough that you think the weaver bases won't hold?  The scope is either going to be a leupold 2x or a red dot.  Anyways any thoughts on these mounts or something different that you might  would be greatly appreciated. Andrew.

I have the clamp style on my 44 super blackhawk. The jury is still out on wether the scope jumps or I jump.

Well after my range session today at about 20 yards, practicing on a Caldwell Deer Target with my SBH I am not a happy camper as I can not clearly line up my sights.

My groups for the .44 mag just were not what they should be for handgun hunting, as some were in the kill zone but other were definite flyer's.

I even painted a nice bright red/orange on the front blade.  I wanted to try this before I invest into the Weaver scope mount.  But I looked at it yesterday and am willing to give it a try along with my BSA Red Dot.  I had contacted BSA and they advised that the 30mm Red Dot is rated for the .454 Casull as well as the 12 Ga shotgun.  I am willing to give it a try.

I also happen to have the 30mm BSA red dot.  At first I thought it was low quality but after 6 turkey seasons it has yet to prove me wrong.  And 12 guage turkey loads can be nasty lol.  If i get the weaver mount i'll either try the BSA or another simmons I have.  Don't know how strong the simmons is it is on a buckmark right now.

Well after my shooting session today with these 52 yr old eyes, I have decided to get the Weaver mount tomorrow as the shop has just one left.  I also put my Hogue mono grip back on the SBH.  I know they look so fugly but I'm tired of getting my middle knuckel whacked everytime I pull the trigger no matter if the loads are mild and worse if they are wild.

So getting back to shooting today, I just had to many outside vital area shots on the Caldwell Deer Target at 25 yards to be happy about it.  Ethically we owe it to the animals that we are hunting to be on the money.  So the Red Dot is going on the SBH, as I want to give this a try before scrubbing my SBH for a longer barreled DA that I am thinking about right now.

If I can salvage my shooting with these changes, then the SBH is a keeper for sure.

cleveland48,

If you go with the two piece type that clamp on to the forward part of the frame with the second piece replacing the rear sight and screw into the forward clamp, that is what I have on my bisley 45. It works well and I have run some pretty hard kicking 45's through it with out any issues. My first base was the type that clamped to the barrel and replaced the rear sight. That did not work well. even with a generous amount of lock tight, it would shoot loose with in the first 25 shots.

But if you do decide to go with a weigand base, I have one Ive never used and will make you a deal on it.

One thing I am going to try first is the Hi-Viz front sight, simply because if I add a scope mount/red dot then I have to go out and purchase a new holster for the set up.  If I need to add a rear sight, then the One Ragged Hole rear sight will be added.  It just makes sense in keeping a 4 5/8ths barreled SBH clean like these do.  If this all does not work well, I will then consider a differant longer barreled handgun for hunting with.

niilescoyote,
Does that two piece mount allow for the shorter optics like a Red Dot or a Halo type?
This is the weigand base of which you have an extra?

Here is a pic of my setup. I wish I had the style that allows the scope to move more forward.

I thought about the weigand, but for now I'd like to keep from drilling out the top strap.  I'm also not really lookin forward to puttin a scope on my blackhawk with the 4 5/8 barrel .  I'd like to shoot a heavy grain but for some reason my sights have run out of adjustment.  It is shootin a few inches high at 25 yards.  But is about 5 or 6 inches high at 50,  This is the only reason I'd put a scope on it.  But as far as the 250 xtp's go they shoot great even out to 100 yards.  When i'm on my a game I can usually(not always) put 6 250gr xtp's on a piece of notebook paper at 80 yards.  I'd really like to get some 255 or 260 gr. SWC for hunting, but I'd have to order them of the internet.  Since around here all you can find are hornady xtp's that is what i'm stuck with for now.  But they seem to work well with several good mushrooms , and pretty deep penetration.  I wouldn't hesitate to use them on a deer, but everyone on here really speaks well of the SWC bullets.
