32 cal. packin pistol
« on: August 20, 2008, 04:57:30 AM »
I have been looking at Cimarron's Lightning with a 3 1/2'' barrel in 32-20 win. It also comes with a second cylinder in 32 H&R mag. I plan on useing it as a dispatch weapon on a winter trap line, and for targets of opertunity, ie varmints and small game. What do you think of these two calibers, and there performance on critters under 60 pounds? I'm looking for somthing small in size, that is easy to carry with more power than a 22 mag.

Not sure about Cimarron's offering but I have used a couple of S&W 32-20s on small game in the past.  Bullet placement is a requirement but on a trapline that shouldn't be a problem.

I ended up prefering a 38 Special loaded with wadcutters for most of my small game stuff.  Quieter and less recoil than the 32 WCF.  ALso more accurate for longer ranges.

Good luck,

Unless you stick to one bullet weight and velocity, adjustable sights would be desirable since .32's tend to change points of impact when you change loads.  As much as I like the .32-20, I think you'll find that the .32 H&R is far less tedious to handload.

I really like the looks of the little gun!  But I would have to chose one in .38 spl just because I can do so much more with it.  44 Man

Is there any trick to putting a bisley hammer on a gun like that?  Looks neat plus easier to reach for me.

I have a Vaquero that has a drift front sight regulated to a 120gr LBTGC bullet that is one of my favorite guns. If it was me I would jump all over that $250.00 and regulate it to a chosen load and carry it for years to come. I am as big of a proponent of adjustable sights as anyone but for a working trail gun fixed sights that can not be knocked of POA makes a lot of since. I have found a second lighter load that seems to hit to the same POA with a 95gr Kieth and moderate velocities that would be a great small game load too.

The point is the Ruger is a great gun and for $250.00 yu can not go wrong. Heck if you don't like it you can certainly sell it for a profit on any of the forums....

I think I agree with 44man.  The 32 will work well but I think a 38 or 357 would be easier to find ammo and the wide variety in ammo and loads as well as the 38's are cheaper than the 32's
But if you reload it will not matter.  As a dispatch gun your going to load a small bullet with a slow speed as to not damage the pelt.  A standard 22 revolver with a cylinder full of CB longs would be better.

Actually, I am finding that the 32 isn't so chiep to reload for. You can't buy a Lee 6 hole mold in 32, and I'm not so much into 32 that I want to lay out big money for a mold. So it means buying bullets, and 32s are just as high or higher than 38. I don't think 32 is going to become my favorite.

I think you'll find the .32 much too destructive for a trapline gun. Oh you could load a round ball down to about 500 fps and not damage much fur but why bother? It is much easier and less expensive to get a good .22 revolver and use any standard .22 short load.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Justen

I've packed numerous sidarms over the years and have to agree with your choice on a .32 for the job at hand.  Yes you can do more with a .38, a .357 or a .44 for that matter. However the .32s fill a neat nische between the .22LR and larger CF cartridges.  While I have numerous larger calibers I often carry my Ruger SS .32 H&R (original run) with 6" barrel or my S&W M31 with a 3" barrel in .32L.  Both are light weight and inobtrusive when I'm also carrying a rifle.  The .32L with SWC/WCs is excellent for dispatching small animals or finishing off bigger animals.  The .32 H&R is also excellent for that with the right load.  I seldom shoot magnum loads in mine as I've found the Hornady swaged lead 90 gr SWC or the Lee TL314-90-SWC at 1050 fps is quite effective.  The same bullet runs 950 fps out of the 3" S&W .32L.  If I feel the need for more than that I will carry a larger handgun in a larger cartridge. However the little .32s make for great back packin guns and I use mine often.

I've a Lee 6 cavity in TL314-90-SWC but it appears they are not made anymore.  One should be able to find one or one of the GB moulds made for the .32s.  I've also the Lyman 313631 GC SWC made for the .32 H&R. It is an excellent bullet for top end loads in either the .32 H&R or the 32-20. Cast soft it can still be driven fast because of the GC.  When HP'd with a Forster 18" tool they are very effective at 1300-1400 fps.  I find the .32L and .32 H&R to be as easy to load as the .38 Special and load coffee cans full of them on a Dillon 550B.
