ENCORE #4233 12 Gauge Slug Gun Questions
« on: July 30, 2003, 01:01:44 PM »
I was wondering if anyone owns this version of the TC Encore.

I am considering buying one.

Question:

1)Accuracy?
2)Types of slugs you use ?
3)Is it available in Black Synthetic? (web site says walnut only)
4)Stocks ever crack from recoil?  (Loos thin along the hand grip area)
5) Converting to Black Powder or rifle....easy?

Opinions appreciated.

You might want to consider a rifled 20 guage barrel instead of the 12.  Winchest make a 20 guage slug load that is basically a ballistic twin of the 45-70.  They use the Combined Technology 45 cal 260 gr Handgun Partition Gold bullet.  No need to brutalize your shoulder or your frame!

12 ga slug barrel

I agree with Tony D

Last year on a whim I purchased a 20 ga barrel from Ed.  Put it on a spare Encore Frame and mounted a Weaver 4X on it with a Virgin Valley base and Weaver 4X4 extension rings.  Using Winchester Sabots the gun would shoot.  I hunt in a shotgun only state and normally use a Savage 210 F, 12 ga.  The encore weighs much less and is easier to move around a tree stand.  Both guns are vary accurate and both kick worse than the 300 winchester mag barrel.  I can't imagine the recoil of a 12 ga slug barrel on an Encore.
In short I took a 8 point buck that was crossing in the field behind me at a bit over a hundred yard.  Until that shot I was not sure that a 20 ga was enough gun for that kind of range.  This year the 20 gauge will see quite a bit more action.

I traded a 20 Ga. Slug barrel TO Ed last year and it really liked the Winchester Partion Sabot Slugs, I think it got about 2.5 to 3 inches at 100 yds. I had a 1.5--4.5X scope on it and it handles great in the tree stand also. Took a couple of deer in Md. with it before moving. If we get stationed back in Md. I'll definitely get another 20 Ga. Slug barrel.

I looked at an Encore 12 gauge today and was wondering if any people had trouble with stocks cracking with high recoil calibers.

The walnut looked good but a black powder version of the Encore had a stock that showed slight hairline cracks in the wood behind the hammer.

What is their QC like in regards to wood?  Are the under warranty?

Thanks.

Recoil not bad (and I only weigh 170 pounds)I'm sure its heavier than the 20ga.  I have lined it up for federal slugs, have also used the hornady slugs.  Federals shot real good, actualy so did the hornady but they are hard to find in my area.  If you get the 12 gauge the scope base is different it is a six hole and longer.  I had to use tall rings so my 50 mm lense did not hi the base.  The 20 gauge uses the same base as the rifle barrels.  No signs of stock damage, I have fired a total of 72 rounds so far.
