back door price increase?

Is this something fairly new? I just had a .44 Mag barrel fitted to a frame by H&R BEFOR the takeover by Remington and the cost was my expense to send the reciever to them, the cost of the barrel, a $15 dollar fitting fee and a $5 return shipping (IIRC).
I just had cause the check what the cost of a barrel would be from the factory on the H&R site (now associated with Remington). The cost of the shotgun barrel I checked was $42, plus the cost of shipping the reciever to them. Added to that was the usual $15 fitting fee but now the return shipping cost has tripled, from $5 to $15. That makes the cost of a $42 barrel somewhere between $80 to $85, PLUS THE WAIT!!!...<><...:(

Shipping costs have increased across the board and H&R had not kept up with it. It has been many years since the day when one could ship a gun across the country for five dollars, fifteen seems fair to me but sure, it does add to the cost of a barrel. You guys just seem determined to find fault with Remington before they even have a chance to do anything.

Return shipping has been $10 for a loooong time, it was $5 when they had their specials running several years ago, but it's been $10 since. The shipping cost is listed as $10 per firearm on this 2006 accessory barrel order form from the FAQs. A $5 increase in shipping isn't much considering the rise in fuel costs over the last year or so.

I guess I was just living in the past when I recalled the $5 return shipping per barrel. I know I have paid between $12 and $20 to ship barrels USPS Priority Mail depending upon the weight. A Heavy (bull) rifle barrel or a Buff Classic barrel being more expensive than a lighter shotgun barrel....<><....:)

To be honest, I can't understand how they did it before.  The shipping and handling was cheap then.  I can understand why they can't do it now.  I guess I'd pay double if they got it out in a hurry.  I haven't dealt with big green yet, so I can't compare them to the old, wonderful, CS in Gardner.

I ordered a new .17 HMR, bull barrel, synthetic stock today.  I just hope it gets here and works.  Night all.  Pete

I understand how they did it before, the accounting department was asleep or management didn't listen to them when they figured their costs.  Maybe that is why Marlin bought them and Remington bought them both.  Don't blame Remington, blame rising costs everywhere, and count yourself lucky that Marlin/H&R didn't just fold and go away.  I would expect that the barrels will be priced higher in the near future when Remington's cost accountants figure out what it costs to make them.  Look at the  price of T/C barrels!  So you had better order them now.

A big difference between the T/C and H&R barrels is that the T/C barrels are designed to fit any frame.  If you want a new T/C barrel, you can buy it and drop it in....the receiver does not have to be sent in to have the barrel fitted.  But a T/C barrel can cost as much or more than a complete H&R rifle.

Shipping costs have gone through the roof. We use some FedEx in our family business. $60 for 2nd day on a 25lb regular box from Texas to Virginia. Bulk shipping is cheaper, but the single package market has gone nutty.

Diesel is $4.50 a gallon UPS, FEDX trucks will get no better than 8 or 9 miles per gallon, I think we are Lucky that they Have held the line as well as they have. I remember 19.9C per gallon gasoline, and 10C diesel but I also remember $0.50 per hour wages.
Not being a wise acre but would you work for $0.50 per hour?

No, I wouldn't work for $.50 per hour these days. I would become a professional hunter. I live on the outskirts of a large city and there are plenty of people who would need my services. What a job that would be! I know that wasn't what you meant, but it's fun to dream.

Never worked for $.50 per hour.  But I did work for $1.00 per hour between high school and college.  Also picked cotton for $.03 per pound.  An outstanding picker, which I was not, might get 300 pounds on a good day....but that was a 14 to 16 hour day.  An average picker would do about 150 to 200 pounds.
