Bought me a new 10FP in .308 Win Saturday!
« on: August 11, 2008, 02:33:05 AM »
I picked up my brand new 10fp .308 Saturday. I am looking forward to getting in some range time with it too.

I have been looking at passing on my 700 BDL .270 to my son but decided to just sell it out right. In South Texas the shots aren't very far and I wanted a .308 so I sent her to a new home. After reading up on different models, I picked the 10 fp.

I have a 93 in 17hmr and love the accu-trigger! I had narrowed down my decision between the Tika Varminter and the 10fp. Actually, the accu-trigger was the final selling point.

Sound off with your best loads for this gun...please!

Cheers!

Congrads!!1 I have a 10FP in .308 Win. also.I really like mine;think you will also.I only shoot paper with mine;too dang heavy to carry hunting. But,if you were in a place you didn't have to do much walking it would be fine.VERY accurate;at least mine is.The loads I like best:Nosler 168 hpbt over 44.0 gr. of RL 15;Benchmark 42 gr;Varget 44.0 gr.; and IMR 4064 44.5 gr.I have some Sierra 168's and 200's,but have not tried them yet.I put a bipod and cheek rest on mine .Have fun ;D...Rick

I have a FP 10 in 308 and 223 in the 308 I shoot Fed. Match Grade 168g. bthp very accurate and I have taken two deer with the loads. At 100 yards 1 inch circle cold bore is almost dead center, shots 2 and 3 are 1/4in high and to the right and touching.

Well I took the .308 out today. The scope came in last week or so (I posted it's arrival), got it mounted after buying a new Weaver set-up.

I broke the barrel in using Black Hills 168gr HP Match ammo. 1 shot then clean, so on and so forth. I put a couple of 3-shot groups together and they all shot sub-MOA.

Being that this rifle will also be my hunting companion...I know it is one heavy beast (specially with 2#'s of scope and hardware), I decided to try out some of the loads I made for it (150gr Sierra GameKings, 44gr IMR4064, Hornady Match Brass and Fed 210 Primers).

I fired 1 shot only...3 inches high. Made the adjustments and fired one 3-shot group...it was a .332 group about 1/2 high at 100yds!

That'll do pig, that'll do!

What kind of scope did you buy?

I got a 10FP Saturday, loaded up 147 grain Winchester boat tails (came in a bag for cheep, break in ammo).

At 100 yards I would get a 2 good shots, then the group would move.  Must be my BSA 8-32 Platinum scope.

I am rather reluctant to post what type of scope it was...never heard of it before him.

I have a couple other scopes on hand that I could have mounted, although none of them are of the tactical variety.

I ordered an Osprey 10-40X50 Illuminate Reticle Tacticle Scope for $98 off of Gunbroker. I figured I would listen to my buddy and try it...the worse I could lose is a hundred bucks and spend the rest of his life picking on him for it.

I did a little looking around the net on these scopes and read some pretty impressive stuff. The only 'American owned and run' company in China. All parts are imported; even the epoxy! Each one is also rated to 50 BMG. So, I figured for a hundred bucks, what would it hurt. Not to mention the fact that it looks VERY intimidating on this rifle. It obviously held zero fine and shot a pretty good group...I can cover the 3-shots completely with a dime. I guess the real test will be in time.

As far as the hunting ammo goes, I only kill what I am going to eat. I have, in the past, found that match ammo leaves little suprise pieces in places of the meat you'de not expect. Here in South Texas I felt that anything above 150gr is a little too much. As I said the load that my buddy recommended, was very accurate. All it took was a Lee Classic Loader (in .308 Win), a balance scale for the powder, a funnel and a small mallet. I have never achieved this kind of accuracy with any 'off the shelf' ammunition.

Thanks for reading and for all the advice I found here.

Cheers!
