22 Target rifle ???
« on: August 09, 2008, 04:49:49 PM »
I'm thinking about getting a 22 Traget rifle. I don't want to break the bank, what would you suggest as a fine 22 bench gun??

I haven't shot one, but they came recommended by the instructor for my son's junior rifle club. Having a good trigger and sights is half the battle.

My son will probably find one under the Christmas tree this year.

I am not sure when you say target rifle what you are talking about. Are you going for NRA formal matches where iron sights are mandatory? Or are you talking bench rest competition? If it is the former then this Savage may fit the bill better.

A recent magazine article said it was the most accurate rifle they have ever shot, including center fires. They shot it at an indoor 50 yard range and it would shoot 1 hole groups of less than .2"

Here is another thread about this rifle

DLH, I have on of these rifles. It's the blued one, not stainless. I've managed .4" at 50 yds. but outside and the wind is always blowing some. I haven't used any really good target ammo either, just Win. T-22 Target and Wolf Target. Most groups are from .5" to .6". I have 10/22 with a 20" Green Mountain barrel and PC hammer and sear kit in a thumbhole stock I built for it and it beats the Savage by .1" to.15" with the same ammo.

i have the mkII FVT. with good ammo and the peep sights i can print 1/2 inch groups at 50 off the benck and a little over an inch at 100. at 25 yards it just shoots one holers or cuts playing cards edgewise. best money i have ever spent on a .22.

You dont say what type of match you are really interested in shooting , The club i belong to shoots ARA and we have some very devoted 22 shooters . The guns and rests and related equipment on there bench must total $5000 easy , shooting $100 a brick 22s. I just dont have that type of money , My CMP kimber has shot groups in the .18s but more often in the .5 range and that wont compete .
If your club shoots IR50-50 , My felling is that it opens the match to alot more people due to classes that allow less exspensive equipement to be competitive.

DLH,

define ". 22 Target," as in what are you intentions.  Iron sights only, scoped, Bench rest, competition.  There are many variables there.

My vote goes for the CZ 452. Mine shoots 1 hole groups at 50yds and 1.25" groups at 100.   My Savage is no where close.

I didn't pay attention to the date of the original post.  Sorry to bring this back up so late.
