45/70 and scope...
« on: August 06, 2008, 03:43:20 PM »
i bought a handi 45-70 synthetic stock and just bought a Leupold rifleman 2-7x33 for it's eye relief and field of view. i was wondering what rings and mounts to get and if i needed a hammer spur for this scope. also if anyone had any comments in this rifle scope combination. I'm a military/L.E. weapon collector, and have never hunted animals. i live in Louisiana and this year will be my first year hunting. i plan on sending the rifle in later for a 30-06 barrel and having this one rifle for all large game hunting. thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Handi-House Slim.   :)

I have a few rifles chambered for the 45-70 and it is one of the more popular rounds on this forum.  You'll get some good information about mounting the scope but not from me.  I don't have scopes on any of my 45-70s as they are primarily short range weapons when used for hunting, not everyone will agree on that, and most traditional long range shooting with these rifles is done with the old style open sights.  Leastways that's my take on it.

I do know the scope you have and it's a good one.  Leupold has been making quality optics for many years, they started in the survey transit and water meter business, and their home office and manufacturing facility is a great place to visit.

Enjoy yourself as you learn to hunt, there is probably a rifle range or two in your area and you can usually hook up with some local hunters that are looking for a "newby" to help pack meat out of the brush.

Welcome SLIMAK707:

I to have that very same scope on my 45-70 handi.
It is a great scope with plenty of eye relief.
On 2 power it is as fast as open sights for that quick close in shot and on the top end the 7 power is fine out to about 200yds, for me anyway.
The only draw back is the 33mm.
It lacks a little when it comes to that really early morning or that last little bit of hunting light shot presents itself.
I still like it a lot on a big bore handi rifle.
You said you are going to get an 06 barrel for it which tells me that you are well on your way to becoming a HANDI-HOLIC.
It gets in your blood.
While you are at it you might as well get a 204 for those varmints and a 28" 12ga barrel with screw in chokes for the birds.
See I told you, it gets in your blood.
Good luck on your first hunt.
Be safe and enjoy yourself.

I don't have the Rifleman scope but believe its the same dimensions as the VXII's that I do have.

Leupold's excellent PRW LO rings are my first choice and QRW's if you need to swap scopes between two barrels.

Here is a pic of that scope and ring on my Hornet. Down load and you can zoom in:

Here is a shot of a LO QRW with the same scope"

Here is still another one from my 243:

The factory hammer extension just slips over the hammer and uses a set screw to hold it in place, no drilling and tapping. Carlson makes one that the say fits, but it doesn't fit very well without modificatiion.
