7mm-08 accuracy issue
« on: August 03, 2008, 04:36:47 PM »
I picked up a 7mm-08 barrel awhile back. Started looking for a load Used some factory Rem core lock's no luck. So far nothing but shotgun patterns with factory or reloads changed scopes same thing.  Slugged the bore and it says the bore .0013 larger than the bullets .2840 verse .2853. I'm not sure if this thing will ever shoot. have not tried it with out the forend yet. That is what I will try next. It locks up better than any barrel I have for this action. Feeler gauge says lock up to breech is good. I don't know how much it was shot before I got it. But i don't think a whole lot there is no copper in the bore I used Outer's foam and got nothing. Base is tight rings are tight. Anybody got any ideas ?

I had the same issue and I just recently loaded up some 160  grain Speer SPBT w/ H4350  44.5Grains and they seemed to group nicely but  with 4 round strings I did have 1 flyer it seemed like. Good luck, Oh yeah I have put about 80 rounds through the barrel so maybe that helped also.

A barrel that is that much oversize, will not be very accurate. The grooves in H&R barrels are only 0.002"
deep so there is blow-by of powder gases. It is possible for the bullet to bear more on one side than the other and wobble. The best thing you can do is not clean the barrel and let the carbon build up some.

An oversize barrel fouled up may proof to be a bit more accurate.

Check the crown of the barrel to confirm no dings throwing the bullets off.  Also check the size of your bullets.  Most of the ammo mfg claim .284 but they really mic out at .283 or less.  Confirm you have bullets that are .284.  Try  some AA2460 loads and work up to near max.  See if your group tightens up.

Good luck.  :)

The crown shows no nicks the bullets 140 gr Nosler BT's measure .2840 And I used the same mic for the slug it measured .2853 I have a couple of more things to try and if that doesn't work out it will be come something else. Or I wonder if you sent the gun in complaining about accuracy if they would do anything or did they keep good enough records to know that serial number didn't start out as a 7mm-08.

H&R will replace an out of spec barrel if it's factory fitted to that frame, if it's a second hand barrel that won't happen which is what it sounds like, the last three digits of the serial number on the frame should be engraved on the left side of the barrel underlug.  :-\
