Anyone use cylindersmith.com???
« on: August 01, 2008, 09:39:39 AM »
I just recently purchased a ruger blackhawk in 45 colt, with a 4 5/8 barrel.  I have heard that the blackhawks in 45 have undersized cylinder throats.  I have tried to push some lead swc (.451) down the front of the cylinder and they will go with some pressure from my thumb.  But have some 300gr xtp's (.452) and they will come no where close to fitting in the cylinder.  The nose of them will hardly go in.  I had loaded the gun fairly hot I guess.  19.0 gr. of H4227 with the 300gr xtp.  And shot it before I noticed it, and it shot fine, with 1 in. groups at 20 yards.  But now I'm worried that when loading it to +p, the pressure's will climb rapidly with the undersized cylinder.  Is this true?  Anyways I got the information for cylindersmith.com, and I was needing to know if I should mess with it or not, because alot of you have more experience with this than I do.  So any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Andrew.

I sent my .45 Colt to cylindersmith and had it reamed to proper size. I have not fired it for accuracy yet. I am going to send it off for a trigger job first. I expect an improvement in group size. At worst I will have a better trigger and a proper cylinder. The rest is up to me and my handloads.

Im thinking about sending mine off Monday morning.  About how long was did it take for yours to get back.  I'm in Northeast Mississippi, i'm not in a hurry or anything just wondering.  Did it look like he did a good job.  I've heard several people talk very highly of his work.

Don't know exactly as I was on vacation when it was returned. I would guess about a week to 10 days.

I had a Smith & Wesson Model 629 done. Shot way better after it came back, which was about a week after I sent it.

You can deal with them in confidence.

I've had him do about 8 Ruger cylinders.
Absolutely top notch.

I had him ream the cylinders on my .45 Blackhawk convertible and highly recommend his work. Both cylinders bores averaged dimensions in the .44s. I have yet to fire the .45 ACP cylinder, but the .45 Colt cylinder would only shoot patterns before sending them in. After getting them back, I went to the range to test it with 335 gr Cast Performance bullets over a minimum charge of W296. The .45 Colt cylinder shot very nice groups at 25 and 50 yards offhand which it never came close to before. I had nearly given up on this gun before having it reamed. I look forward to seeing what it will do now with a load developed for it.
