My "new" Winchester scout rifle
« on: July 31, 2008, 03:27:26 PM »
I bought this Winchester Timber Scout 94 in 30/30 caliber yesterday.  It has a factory scout scope base and ghost ring sights. The barrel is 18 inches and the short magazine tube holds 4 rounds.  I'm looking forward to seeing how well it shoots with a  LER scope. Thanks for looking.

You have GOOD sights, too.  Good deal!  Let us know how it shoots.

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

Go EZ there.  A LER scope might have an eye relief window that's too far away to be useful on a scout mount - which is closer to your eye than you think.

Shoulder the gun and have someone measure the distance from your sighting eye to the rear of the scout base.  I'd be willing to say it'll be about 9" or so - in which case you'd be much better off with an IER (Intermediate Eye Relief) scope - which usually has a 9" -17" or 11" - 21" window.

The differences being a full tube of sight picture, or not, when you look through in the mounted position.

I had to go to a Weaver 2x28 pistol scope to fit the ergonomics of my eyes & body, after trying a Leupold & a Burris (both "Scout" scopes) w/o success.
It was an expensive lesson, only partially recouped by reselling the Scout scopes.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have three pistol scopes to try before I buy any more, a Burris 2x, a Tasco 1-4, and a Simmons 2X. Hopefully one of them will be OK to use.  I saw a nice set of Leupold QD mounts today with levers that fit Weaver bases.  They might be the perfect choice for rings. Doug, I like your Winchester a lot. You have a great looking set-up.
