Replacing the hammer spring in a Contender

Last Saturday was the Idaho State Silhouette Match.  I was out early practicing with my favorite Contender when I pulled back the hammer and got that funny feeling response when you break the hammer spring.  I have replaced a hammer spring on a Contender before but it was a long time ago and I am not sure how I did it.  If anyone has a good system I would sure like to know it.  I do remember that it was more trouble than I wanted last time.  It is a new style frame with the selector switch on the hammer.

I did have an extra frame, which I used.  The trigger is not quite as nice but it is still acceptable.  I ended up getting a 45/60 to finish 2ed in the AAA class.  Not really bad but I think I could have been in the 50s if I had been useing the frame that broke the spring.

www.bellmtcs.com........it is the web site of Mike Bellm and he does nothing but contenders and encores....it is an interesting site kind of like this one, but not as many topics....he does custom work on TC's and I believe it is on his opening page there is a place you can download his old cd on doing trigger jobs the encore....not sure if the contender is exactly the same or not, but I am sure I saw things for it also......if not just email him and I will bet a dollar to a donut he will give you all the info you would need....hope this helps....Rob in Olympia

As Jeff said a slave pin is needed.  I made one from nail that fits in the hole in the hammer.  Cut the pointy end off and then cut to length (length is the width of the hammer).  Use the pin to hold the spring in the hammer when pushing it down into position.  Push the hammer pin in once lined up and it will push the slave pin out.
