The cost of new Handi's

I was in Gander Mountain today just browsing around looking at new rifles. The Handi's sure have went up in price. A 223 Ultra was $350 A plain ol' Handi in 243 was $280. Last fall plain 44 Mags and 500 S&Ws were $300, but I figured they were gouging the deer hunters, not so sure now.

I paid $300 for a brand new Ultra Varmint in .223, but had to pay 15 bucks for the shipping because my gunstore had to order it.

I bought a 223 Ultra 2 years ago for $250, inflation hurts. I am sure you can buy them cheaper, but then you have to pay shipping and then get an FFL to make the transfer for a fee and then pay sales tax on top of that. What a hassle. The local Mom and Pops want even more than Gander Mountain. Gander Mountain is about as cheap as I can buy locally but we have a 7% sales tax now too to add on. Walmart is probably cheaper, there is one about 35 miles from me that still sells guns, but that is quite a trip just to price a gun. All guns have went up, the Stevens 200's were $350 too. I did see a Remington 700 with laminated stock for $500 in 30-06, does not seem that bad of a buy any more. What is a guy to do? Just cool it for a while, I guess.

It pays to shop around, even with shipping and FFL fees, Bud's prices are still better than Gander!

I picked up a new .44 magnum Handi for $219.00 a month or two ago. 

I guess I got a better deal than I thought!

Bud's price on a 223 Ultra is $339 I do not think I can have it shipped and a FFL fee for $11. The regular Handi at $242 is a little better at $58 difference. I bought a 44 Mag for $250 last fall, but it was a special run with synthetic stocks. I am just going to have to get used to it. It is just the Ultra went up $100 or 40% in two years, OWCH! I guess they are getting more popular.

Bud's prices are the shipped price, FFL would be on top of that.  It isn't the popularity so much as the cost of fuel to ship the goods to make the rifles, how much was gas a year ago?

Done alot of business with buds.  Very good people.  That is where my ultra varmint 22-250 just came from....they usually have the best price on guns as pointed out by tim its a shipped price.

Try to buy my handis at gun shows. Seems to be where i can get the best prices on firearms in general. I usually buy 12 or so a year(Firearms in general not just handis) Gander Mountain has a great selection but prices seem a little stiff to me.Dicks had Ultra handis with scopes around 300 ish 223, 243, 22-250,

Seems mine cost me around $550-$600 each.


Of course, that's after I send it in for 2-3 more barrells and decent glass to put on them.  Of course, I didn't add the cost of that aluminum takedown shotgun case that I store the set in when I go to the range.

Now, I'm not talking Ultras, as my Gander never seems to carry them. Something I noticed last year, is Octoberish, leading up to our deer season, they seem to come down around $50-$70. I bought my 223 bull last october for $199 after it was marked as $249 in September.

If you are pricing these .223 Ultra's at these prices in the lower 48, I think I got a good deal.  I paid 289.00 at Sportsman Warehouse in Anchorage with shipping and FFL fees for an Ultra bull .223 Rem, brand new less than 4 months ago.  Needed this topic and member input to get it to shoot within 1" at 100'ds, but stilll need to work on finding the sweet spot for reloads.  Think it will do within .5 with some fine tuning.  Very happy with it, so far and it is my first Topper rifle.  Had several shotguns over the years but not rifles.  Do you think I might be hooked now?
