Eye Relief
« on: July 24, 2008, 08:42:26 PM »
I really don't like the eye relief of my scope. In order to see through it I have to hold the gun in an uncomfortable position. I would like one with enough eye relief that I can hold the gun out with my arms out straight. Any suggestions?

What scope are you using?

The easiest way I've found to check the eye relief on multiple scopes is to go to MidwayUSA.  In there product listings there is also a specifications page which gives, among other things, eye relief.

What gun and scope are you using?
Myself, I mostly use a red-dot or Holo sight on my hunting handguns. Only on my long distance handguns do I use a scope.
But no matter what you get, you have to get use to it. Handguns scope are a different animal when it comes to scopes. Nothing like a rifle scope and none of them will be. That is the down side to handguns with scopes.

Have you considered a red-dot or Holo sight? They are the most user friendly way to go for a handgun.

Here "ole crazy MePlat" goes again.  I own Leupold,  Bushnell,  Burris,  Simmons,  Redfield both varible and fixed and I never think about eye relief as long as I know I won't get clobbered in the head>  I just hold them and shoot them and have now for years along with iron sights.  I have also shot but never owned a T/C  varible set on seven power and a Leupold 21/2 to 8 with it set on 8 offhand and never thought about it.
Maybe I am missing something in life and don't know it.

On my S&W 617 I have an old Tasco that is perfect. I know Tasco isn't the world's best, but it's been fine for that .22 and I have taken a lot of squirrels with it. I can hold the gun straight out, either sitting or standing, in a natural position, and I really like it.

However, on my .44 Bisley (regular 7.5" model) I have a Simmons 3x that makes you bend both elbows, and the gun position is about half way between you head and full extension. I would like a good scope that would allow me to sit with my back against a tree with my knees drawn up, and my arms extended over my knees. Or, standing behind a tree, having my arm extended leaning against it for support.

Hey Redhawk; glad you showed up here. I was going to email you if you missed this. I always value your experience and input. I have never had a red-dot. As an old fart with eyes that aren't as good as once wuz, I was thinking a scope would be better, but I'm always willing to learn something new.

Have you tried adjusting the eye piece? On most handgun scopes adjusting the eye piece will change the eye relief.

Yeah, I was afraid I was gonna screw the thing all the way off, but it didn't change anything.
