i am trying to get a cast load for deer.  i am using 310 grain hardcast bullets.   i was gunning for 1000 fps, chrono-ed today and they clocked at 874 fps.   will these be suffiecint, or should i load up to my original target velocity?

If that bullet has a flat or hollow point, and you stick it into the vitals, 874 fps will be just fine.  A lot of deer have been killed with 44-40s and 38-40s over the years, and a 310 grain bullet (even at "only" 874fps) makes the WCFs look pretty weak.  Just be sure of your range and limitations.

What gun and caliber is this in?  If its a 44, you can go with about 21.5 grains of 296 with a 300-315 cast and get roughly 1300 or so out of a 7.5" Ruger.  The gun will have a big part in what you can get.  If all you are wanting is 1000fps, you should have no problem at all reaching that goal.  The extra velocity will basically just get you a little flatter trajectory.  900 fps with a 310 would probably do just about anything you want with a deer but my loads are a bit faster.  Its all in what you want......GS

silly me,  forgot that info.  44 mag sbh hunter.     same load clocked 991fps out of my 1894.

If its accurate use it. Sometimes I have found that the big bullets need 1000 fps second to be accurate at longer ranges. Just make sure it shoots good at the max range youll be hunting. A 300 grainer at that speed will shoot through a deer so the power level is fine.

I load with a stiff charge of H110, (same as Win 296) and get about 1,370fps. for 1,000 try 13 grains of 2400.  Blue dot would probably be a good choice but I can't find a load right now. I like loads in the 1.000/1,100 fps. range. My favorite load pushes a 240 swc at about that speed and it is fine out to 100 yards.  You don't need a gas check at that speed.
