NEF 10 Gauge Questions

I own a NEF 10 Gauge Magnum with a fixed full choke, 28 inch ported barrel and a NN prefix.  About when was it made, and why is it ported?  I don't understand how the  straight porting helps a single shot.  Rhanks for any information.

The frame was made in '99, build year info can be found in the FAQs. Can't help ya on the porting question, I didn't know they did that on factory guns, it may have been done aftermarket.
