« on: July 15, 2008, 11:09:25 AM »
I like to ask the guys who shoot the 38-55 a question ?
I reloaded my starline brass now about 8 times and find the case will not stretch .

In my long experience with 375 Winchester I've had the same results; no stretch. I'm still using cases that have been reloaded 25-30 times. When they eventually fail, it'll be from the neck splitting.

How about the 45-70 shooters. What's been your experience?

The Starline cases have a reputation for being very hard. If you want them to stretch, run them over an unlubed expander ball a couple of times.

You may also try Annelling the top 3/4" of the cases , this will soften the brass and allow it to grow some too .

I haven't trimmed any of my 45-70 cases.  Remington, Winchester, Starline.  Some of the Winchesters with my squirrel loads have 7 or 8 loads through each brass.  Remingtons have had some nearly max loads through them and haven't stretched,  Starline I have loaded to almost 60 grain H4198 under a 300 grain bullet several times and no stretching there either.

Am I missing something here? Why would we want the brass to stretch? As I noted above with my .375 my cases are lasting almost forever with no stretching. (Winchester brass)

It has been my experence that straight wall case will not grow whether pistol or rifle,
Like bottle neck case do. I would not worry bout That. My @ cents.
