which scope bushnell or nikon
« on: July 15, 2008, 10:51:38 AM »
Need help deciding which one Nikon 2x or Bushnell elite 2x6. I have looked at the nikon and like it but, concerned about low light performance and i have no where to look at the bushnell but, have looked at the 2x6 trophy model and don't really care for it and I have had problems with Burris so that's out. It is going on a Ruger SBH 44mag. Any help would great!

does the eye relief change when you turn it up? How is it in low light?

I have a Bushnell Elite 2x6 on my 223 Encore handgun, and I love it.  But my handguns that I don't shoot over 100 yards wear red-dots on them. Faster target acquisition.

Have you considered a Ultra-dot red-dot or are you set on the scope?

I currently have for handgun scopes a Bushnell Elite 2x6 on my Encore 223, Bushnell Trophy 2X6 on my S&W 460 Mag, Leupold VXIII 2.5X8x32 on my Encore 308 Win, Leupold 2X on my BFR 45-70 and a Burris 4x on my Encore 480 Ruger.  I like the Leupolds followed by Bushnell scopes.

The rest of my hunting handguns wear red dots, either Ultra-dot or Eotech.

i'm pretty set on a scope, had a red dot before this and it was ok but, prefer the scope. I really like the 2x nikon, just a little concerned about being able to see in the early am and evening, thought maybe the bushnell with the bigger tube might help but, still undecided. Do you notice any difference between the trophy and elite scopes?

I don't notice any difference between the trophy and Elite really, and you will need a bigger OBJ if you are looking for more light gathering capability. The 2x does no good in low light conditions, I have better luck with the red-dots in low light conditions.

Have you ever looked through a handgun scope in low light and try to find the cross hairs, almost imposable. The red-dots work great in low light.

Good luck..

May have to look at the trophy again, figured the elite had to be better for the extra cost but, still thinking about the 2x Nikon, I like the eye relief, very quick and easy to look thru, confusing!!

I was having the same dillema, and ended up having to put the trophy and elite side by side.  With the new constant eye relief on the trophy... I don't see the dollar for dollar value of buying the elite.

I shoot a couple of trophys and a 3200 elite. Stable eye relief on power change is advertized but those others, like weaver make their case for changing relief. Me be happy w/bushnell trophy ~ the elite 3200 is good w/rainguard but big difference in costs makes me wonder if its worth it.

Both busnells are finger adjustable and the elite has cliks ~ the trophys may also, I'll make a point to chk next time in the gunsafe ~

mastrb (And Others)

I have put an ugly rubber Hogue mono-grip on my SBH but found that it is an excellent platform for the balance and sight picture as well as soaking up recoil like you wouldn't believe.
I would like to push this one step farther and install a scope on the thing and reserve it more for the late season hunt where longer shots would be more the norm while saving my Vaquero's
with the stock grips and iron sights for the regular deer season as I really do love the true single action design.

Did you come up with a Scope mount for your SBH yet? I am interested in the one that secures to the back sight screw but also has the front clamp that secures it to the barrel at the throat area.
Does anyone know who makes these?
Should be a simple search I know but when you are a (Chemo-head) like I am, 1+1 can add up to three in a hurry and I just cant find it.

P.S. I would really like to stay away from that straight B-Square mount...I have heard some good things but also a lot of bad about them.

My SBH is the Bisley Hunter model and has factory rings and mounts. I would like to put that ugly Hogue grip on but, I don't think they make them for the Bisley model? As far as a Leupold 2x, I looked at one and did not like the eye relief, otherwise had no problems with it.

I was considering a 2X for my SBH Hunter and read the Midway USA customer feedback/reviews on both the Nikon and Leupold. Several people actually preferred the Nikon over the Leupold. For what it's worth, I have Nikons on both my rifles. The place where I bought my scopes believes that in the Buckmaster & Monarch price range, the Nikons are actually better than a comparbly priced Leupold.

opticaly id have to agree with you. Theres probably not another 200 dollar scope that compares opticaly to a buckmaster  but i dont know about the durability. I was at the buddys gunshop the other day and he had two buckmasters laying of the table. i thought they were used and for sale and he said no they were defect returns that he had to ship back. He said hes had more buckmasters go back for repair and replacement then about all the other scopes he sells combined. Part of that may be due to the fact he sells quite a few of them though. He said he hasnt had a bushnell go back for repair in a couple years and couldnt remember the last leupold he sent back.

I went and put about 100 rounds thru it this weekend without a hitch,(can't say that for burris), so far I'd highly recommend nikon.
