U.S. not allowing hunters to bring home Moose?!

I just heard that The Almighty U.S. Gov will not allow me to bring back my moose (except antlers with "cleaned" skullcap).  

This is a great concern to me as I have a scheduled Hunt in Ontario this season.  My Fellow hunter will not go if he can not "bring home the bacon".

I was wondering if anybody knows how I can check this out to verify the second hand facts.

hi fred. For the time being, I'm afraid that's true. due to the ONE cow that tested positive for b.s.c. ( mad cow disease), the usda will not allow any meat from cows, pigs, or wild game either hunted or raised. funny thing is: that cow was traced back to a herd in wyoming! Anyways, I'd suggest you contact the usda office near a u.s. border crossing such as pembina, nd to find out if this is true, or if they will allow processed game in ie; butchered and packaged for consumtion. If you need help with phone numbers, please don't hesitate to ask.

Its my understanding that the ban on wild game has now been rescinded. Moose, caribou, deer, etc.... are supposed to be okay again. Doesn't hurt to confirm this though. The ban, at least for Newfoundland originating game, was stupid. We're an island for God's sake! No Mad Cow or CWD and no beef industry like Alberta. From my perspective, a lot of it has to do with the decision our moronic Prime Minister made not to support the war in Iraq. He's the prima donna, elitist moron that made the decsion not to support our number one ally because he liked Bill Clinton better...and we have to pay for it. Can't blame President Bush though. Our government deserves it.

Just came across confirmation that ban has been lifted, at least for wild ruminants. According to the NAHC:

Ann M. Veneman, secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), announced late last week the USDA will no longer prohibit the importation of hunter-killed wild ruminant products intended for personal use and will begin  accepting applications for import permits for certain products from Canada.

The USDA says hunters will need a "Veterinary Services Special Permit for theImportation of Hunter-Harvested Wild Ruminant Meat," along with a valid Canadian export certificate for game meat, or a copy of a valid hunting license orvalid hunting tag. The permit can be downloaded from www.aphis.usda.gov/lpa/issues/bse/bse.html or obtained by calling the USDA's National Import and Export Center at (301) 734-3277.

I also have confirmed the above to be true as of August 8, 2003.

Be sure to check which port of entry will allow importation of this wild meat as not all are set up for this inspection.

My moose hunt is back on!
