Author Topic: Remington 700 Project 25-06 (Read 943 times)

I purchased a Remington 700 30-06 (20" barrel) that was manufactured in 1964 for the sole purpose of using it as a project rifle. It cost me 289.00 so I have that much in already. Since it is a long action I'm going to send it to Pac-Nor to rebarrel it with a 25-06 with a 26" barrel with a match crown. I just sent the trigger group off to have a match trigger job done on it (2.5lbs.).

What I need from the forum is any feedback about the 25-06, I've never own or shot one. I have heard the recoil is light, but I don't know that for a fact. Any help would be appreicated.

Dbuck : I had one of the earliest rem. 700 bdl in 25-06 amd it was a wonderful rifle/caliber setup, yes vary little recoil and as Best as I can remember the 117 sierra did me a better job than the 120, sorry I cant provide any load info as all was lost in a fire 3 years ago but I do remember the monster of a muledeer a friend of mine shot with his while deer/and elk hunting N. of Craig Co. It was one of my loads bullet entered just behind shoulder went up thru the neck and broke the deers jaw, instant lay down from there.

I have a new Tikka Laminated Stainless in .25-06 that I will be taking to the range this weekend. I'll let you know how she does as soon as I find out.

I've had a Remington 700 BDL VS since about 1970. As this is the VS model, it's a pound or two heavier than yours but the difference won't be huge.

The best 5 shot group I ever got out of it with handloads was 3/8" with an 87 grain bullet but it'll shoot 5/8" to 3/4" 5 shot groups all day long...with handloads. I've never fired a factory round through it.

My wife loves to shoot it and will run through as much ammo as I bring to the range with me. I should add that she's recoil sensitive and her personal rifle is a .220 Swift, so that should give you some idea of the recoil it generates. Recoil is more of a push than a sharp rap or jar.

Definitely a keeper.

Excellent choice in the .25-06. I a big fan of the quarter bores and a even bigger fan of the .25-06. I was shooting them long before Remington stamped their name on it and took it out of the realm of the "wildcat" cartridges. I got three in myself at the moment, two I bought(both Ruger's - a No.1B and a M77V "Centennial Model") and one I inherited(Remington M700 Varmint) from a high school buddy. All of my .25-06's wear 26" barrels with 1-10" twist and this is the length/twist I recommend as it seems to get the most out of the cartridge.

I use mine for everything from ground squirrels(a tad bit over gunned, maybe) to Tule Elk and Black Bear(didn't plan on using it but that's the way it worked out)with great results. Accuracy seems to be at it's best with 100 thru 117 grain bullets although they will still put 75 grain varmint bullets into 1" or less groups. The .25-06 is most likely the best all-around varmint/big game cartridge going. Let me know if you want load information. Lawdog

Lawdog, thanks for the reply, it will take me several months to complete my project, but should have a great rifle when I'm finish. If I was smart and who said I was, I would sell the Remington 700 30-06 and take the money and add money to it and buy one already build. I would be way ahead. I was checking on Ruger and Remington with 26" barrels and 1/10 twist and they sell for around 600.00. Alot more then that in this project. Lets see:

1. Remington 700 30-06 289.00
2. Barrel/action job 270.00
3. Trigger Job (Just sent) 30.00
4. Stock 250.00

Total: 839.00

Time: 14 weeks, oh I forgot the blue job: 125.00

If anyone is wondering what it cost to do a project look no further, this will give you a will good ballpark number.

I have a Savage Tactical in 25-06. We originally had Remington BDL in this same chamber, but we traded it in to get the Savage (I'm a lefty and my dad didn't shoot it anymore). Strangely, my dad said the 117 Sierra boattails shot pretty good from his remington also jhm. My Savage shoots them good also (3/4" groups consistently, and it did shoot a .43" group once with them), but I have got 1/4 MOA groups with Sierra's 90 and 120 HPBTs (sorry for bragging, I love my rifle). However, the HPBTs don't have the balistic coefficient of the 117 SBT. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it to. I got some Barnes 100 XBTs on order, I'll see if they can give me 1/2 MOA.

I really can't tell you much on the recoil, this is the most powerful rifle I have ever fired. My dad's 25-06 was also the first high power rifle I ever fired, and it did make my sholder a little sore. However, I was new to the game, and it wasn't bad at all. I can tell that with the choate sniper stock on my Savage (she's a fat lady, tiping the scales at ~14-15 pounds) she is a pussy cat.

You will like the 25-06. The one I owned shot tight groups with handloads and the kick is quite low with the 87 grain bullets and not really bad with some of the heavier bullets. Though I am shooting mostly 243's now the 25-06 really tares a ground hog or crow up and there seems to be alot of variety as far as bullets go, if you are into reloading. Kicks alot less than a 30-06. Kick is much like a .243.
