« on: July 07, 2008, 10:27:10 AM »
I have just inherited my wifes Great grand dad Savage 99 Iam not even sure what model 99 it is yet It has the cresent type butt stock
and the straight grip. I got it home and loaded it up. I fired 3 shots through it and the butt stock cracked where the stock meets the receiver. The gun had not seen daylight in 40 years I went over it carefully to check for fucntion etc. It is a 30-30 and shot great but was heart broke when I saw the crack had developed although a hairline crack I wont shoot again till repaired any info on wheather to repair this or where to locate a replacement stock would be greatly appreciated
, if god didnt want us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat?

I suspect you broke it cuz you fired the WRONG AMMO in it. Now I'm for sure no Savage 99 expert but I strongly suspect it ain't no .30-30 Winchester but rather a totally different round with similar name with the Savage applation at the end of it. Perhaps a .303 Savage? Or even .300 Savage. or perhaps a .30-30 Savage what ain't exactly the same as a .30-30 WCF I don't think. Just guessing here and someone more familiar with Savage rifles will be along in awhile.

Folks who get a gun old or new really but especially an old one they have zero knowledge of really should ask for help and advice before they ruin it not afterward. At this point my recommendation is to find a good gunsmith and turn it over to him for evaluation and advice on your next move.

Well,Savage did make a 30-30 in the 99.Yep 30-30 win. I saw one once.  Now I had an old 16 ga. Ithica 37 and shot one high brass shell out of it and cracked the stock. :-[ It happens, with a gun that is old the wood dries out and gets brittle.Tough break man.

Savage chambered the 1899/99 in 30/30 from the first year of production until WW2.It is a fairly common chambering to encounter in vintage 99s.

99's are notorious for cracking in the tang,so that is not a big suprise. You might want to contact Boses Guns. They do really good stock repairs for reasonable prices.I've seen some of the work they've done on 99's,and it was superb. Here's a link to their website-

BTW,from your description,it sounds like you have an 1899-A.If you would like to find out what year it was made, you can do so here-

Best of luck with your rifle, and let us know how it turns out.
