I've read that article a few times now.  I really like that website as well.  You can find these rifles on gunbroker.com for $300 new in the box.  It would have me thinking more seriously about it if I wasn't pinching pennies for an upcoming kid.

I held one of these last night.  For the most part it felt like a very solid 30-30.  The action was a little rough when playing with the lever, but overall I didn't think it was bad for the $$.

I picked up a copy of Rifleman yesterday and there's an article on it. I have to say it appears to a fine gun and at a price you cant beat . Its a great replacement to the Win 94 , heck Mossbergs plant is just 5 miles down the road.
The 100yd test results were impressive with Hornadys Lever Revolution ammo.
I gonna try to buy one this weekend ,cant wait.

I purchased one 6 months age and I like it quite a bit. The actions are a little stiff but so were the 94 Winchesters when you pulled them out of the box. As the gun broke in it smoothed out quite a bit. The gun handles great and reminds me of the older standard Winchester 94s before it was “improved it” (made awful).

The safety is on the tang which to me is better than the bolt safeties on Marlins and some newer Winchesters. It has a nice rubber recoil pad that really grips the shoulder. A nice gun for the money and easy to scope, try one I bet you like it!

So how does it eject?  I assume that it kicks the brass out at an angle so you can mount a scope like the Marlin, though it would probably wear a peep sight if I got one.  Pretty little things!

Hi Winter Hawk,

Yes, the Mossbergs 464 lever ejects from the top at an angle like the newer versions of the Winchester 94. It has a bridge at the rear of the receiver that is tapped for a scope mount that the bolt runs under. It uses the same weaver bases front and back and is very scope friendly in my experience.

A really nice gun for the money, it is like an improved Winchester 94. You may or may not like the safety on the tang that is similar those on shotguns. My gun seems to like all the factory ammo I have put through it so far.

I do have one big complaint about the Mossberg 464 rifle I have just discovered. I removed the scope and took the gun to the range yesterday to use the factory sights.

The gun shot 10 inches high at 50 yards using Remington 150 grain rounds! Why don't they sight in their guns? The Marbles folding rear sight has some sight adjustment for elevation but a standard Marbles sight with a ladder elevation would have been a much better choice. You have to loosen the screw that holds the sliding notch to slide it down. I had lower the sliding notch so much that the flat top sight now looks like a set of buckhorn sights. The front sight is already tall so a better rear sight is what is needed.

I plan to replace the rear sight with a Marbles long flat top rear sight that uses a sliding ladder to adjust for elevation. This is the sight I used to replaced the semi-buckhorn sights on my Henry Big Boys and Marlin Cowboy rifles also.  At least I had nice groups, even if they were too high.
