A-5 Mag. Information needed
« on: July 03, 2008, 03:45:22 AM »
For 30 years I used a A-5 Lt. 12 for waterfowl hunting but decided after killing 1000's of water fowl with a 2/34 gun I needed a 3.5 inch gun so I went and purchased a Benelli Super Black Eagle. The SBE is a great gun but I want an A-5.  As my father in law stated years ago there are shotguns and then there's the A-5.  So my question is was the A-5 magnum either Belgium or Japanese made with a 26 or 28 inch barrel?

My answer is: All of the above.  ;)

The A-5 Magnum was introduced in 1958 by FN with 26,28,30, or 32 inch barrels; and production in the same lengths was switched to Miroku in 1976.

Some FN, and all Miroku models had vent ribs, FN's had various fixed chokes, Miroku's had Invector chokes.

Just a note about the A-5 Magnum.  I have one.  It's actually in darned nice shape, but for whatever reason, I can't hit a darned thing with it (even when shooting a stationary piece of paper the pattern is extremely widespread, regardless of what choke I use).  My dad was it's original owner - he gave it to me because he couldn't hit a thing with it.  My uncle has one just like it with the same results.  Several other people I know who purchased Brownings of a smiliar age also complain about this.

Now, mine is a Japanese model, made in roughly 1987 or 88.  I've seen Belgian models that shoot well, and I've seen some of the later Japanese models that shoot well, but for whatever reason they seemed to let some duds go out the door in the mid to late 80's (can't complain about the functioning though - it goes band and cycles well every time).

On the flip side, my boss recently bought a brand new Benelli shotgun that was failing to detonate primers on half the shots it fired recently.  They made good on it, but he was frustrated.  My brother had a similar issue with a Stoeger which he was sent back and it came back better, but it's still snapping on a lot of rounds.  It's darned hard to find a GOOD semi-auto out there these days, and it doesn't even seem to help buying high dollar stuff.

The other draw back is if you get a Belgian model you have to use Bismuth or other Non steel loads as the barrels are not made to shoot steel! I think but don't quote me but the Japanese Models can shoot steel!  I have a Belgian Mod. 1956 love it! I don't hunt ducks -it's my heavy Pheasant /Turkey gun! As far as shooting -it patterns just fine taken many dove, quail, partridge, pheasants with it.

IIRC, the single-barrel Japanese Brownings, for one year (or so) back then, had barrels that were bent ( I bought a new BPS that was), and some that had the Invector chokes bored at a slight angle - throwing the pattern in different directions, depending upon how tight the choke tube was tightened.

I have a Belgium Light twelve made in 72 or 73.  I am thinking about an occasional duck hunt.  Can I shoot steel in that gun?

Sure you CAN, but it'll most likely ruin the barrel - I'd only use/shoot Bismuth or some other substitute in it.
