Most people don't care how fast they can shoot a bullet, most hunter care how accurate it is.  ;)

They are very accurate. I can put three into a 2" circle at 100 yds. But thats not what I asked.

What gun?  What barrel length?  Was that 1420 chronographed or guessed.  My 8 3/8's S&W only go 1305 with Hornady factory 500 gr JSP and equivalent handload.

I pretty much stick to the lightest charges I can get out of a reload book for any given bullet weight and it works great for me.  I guess if a city bus ever goes on a rampage I'll load some hot rounds.

Yes my barrel is 8 3/8" long, the gun is The S&W 500 revolver.  The fps was chronographed.

My opinion only but I would say if you are getting that velocity with the 500 Hornady than you are over on powder charge.  If with certain cast designs I don't know.  The cor-Bon 500 gr cast with of my  inch 4"  got 1240 fps so that would be about right from an 83/8's
Even my 10 inch Encore only got 1400 or so with the 500 gr Hornady and a very close to max load.

I would say you are right at max with that 500 Hornaday .
I shoot a 575 WFNGC at max it is Vel 1442 and a 600 Grain LFNGC Vel 1414 Max load this is out of a S&W PC Hunter 10.5 barrel

I was shooting MAXIMUM loads with the 500 GR HORNADY published by Hodgdons Powder Co.  I think I was slightly over max on one using H4227.  I also used H110 and W296.
Still did not come close to 1420 in an 83/8's" REVOLVER.

I think the added length in my barrel gives me just a little bigger boost in the Velocity area.

Ranger Rick have you tried the long nose short shank bullet design that John Ross talks about in his writing on the S&W 500?
He is getting some high FPS with a 510gr bullet on page 13.

Wow, that's accuracy at it's best and your shooting isn't bad either. I've personally seen scoped rifles shot from sand bags that wouldn't shoot that good? If I were you I'd consider getting on your state pistol team for next year?

buck460XVR, no sarcazm intended just compliment and envy. Are you saying that's not excellent shooting or are you trying to start another flame war, like on the other sites you visit? Off topic but, far too much of this type of activity anywhere on the net, in my opinion? Get a life!

sorry S.B. if I misunderstood your post......to me it sounded sarcastic. Maybe it was the question marks at the end of your statements. Excuse me, it wasn't sarcasm, just poor grammar. Easy to misinterpret ones intentions when posts contain so many grammatical/punctuation errors. Thanks for being so concerned about my life, but believe me, I have one and as far as my opinions, I am entitled to them and free to express them just as you are. I believe there is an amendment for that also. As far as flaming bro....maybe you should practice what you preach. Many want to talk the talk but far too many can't walk the walk. You have a good one. Buck.

jro45, next time you go to the range with your 500 Mag, PM me. I would love to watch you shoot them groups.
What scope are you using?

My 500 mag pc 10.5 doesnt shoot that good but maybe 4" groupes at 100 yards with no scope and I am not the best shooter. I seem to have better luck with it at the range then my new marlin 1895 guide gun in 4570 with a 18' barrel. The sights on the smith are easyer on old eyes then my marlin. I believe someone that is a good shooter could get 2' groupes with this performance center 500 if that is what he is shooting. I am not sure about the 500 grain loads thought. The leverution 350 grain loads are preety good for shooting paper.
